And nothing of real value was lost, because let's face it: David Hayter was never really a good voice actor. The grit he employs for Snake's voice is more comical than anything. Rarely, if ever does it actually come off as genuinely convincing, and this is highly apparant with his downright dreadful voicework in MGS4.
Big Boss/Venom Snake may not have been much of a talker in MGSV, but Sutherland was still able to incorporate the needed gravitas with his voice work that Hayter never managed to capture with his tenure in the series. A lot of Boss' dialogue in MGSV would have sounded idiotic had they been performed by Hayter's contrived gruffness. Sutherland is able to convey the grit naturally, and it's one of the aspects which prevent MGSV's narrative from going completely off the rails.
Alas, Phantom Pain is a game fans love to hate. But I do think it has an under-appreciated narrative upon considering how fans will easily gobble up BS fan-service as shown in Guns of the Patriots. Also, on a pure gameplay perspective, it destroys every other title in the series not called Snake Eater.
At the end of the day, Sutherland is now Big Boss in my eyes.
