So it dawned on me that maybe the reason for such diverse and seemingly total-opposite opinions on games these days is not simply one of personal tastes or preferences but would often be derived from where the opinion in question falls into where does the gamer sit with the game especially when it comes to sequels.
While some people might claim that gaming originals like Arkham Asylum or the Last of Us are over-rated neither game can be accused of not being innovative or fresh for their time. What follows is when games create dozens of sequels and spin-offs.
This leads to series fandom, series fatigue or series newbie syndrome. Let me illustrate this by several examples.
There are Nintendo fans that can't get enough of Mario's 2D Platformers. It seems it doesn't matter how many iterations of the Mario Bros that Nintendo can churn out but there is a dedicated fan-base that just can't get enough Mario Platformers. This illustrates Series Fandom.

For me, personally I have really enjoyed the Assassins Creed Games and have played every major entry in the series. While reviews seemed to love Syndicate, I found my time in London to be rather boring. The two-twin protagonists didn't have the impact of wit or humor with me nor did I find their skills to differentiate themselves that much. All-in-all, I believe many people who have really enjoyed the game perhaps haven't played the more recent Assassins Creed games or are series newbies. However, for me, Assassins Creed Syndicate has reached Series Fatigue (or boredom) and a cross between Batman and Rico Rodriguez's grappling hook doesn't make Syndicate more fun for me.

While there are some people who have played all of Bethesda's games and were upset to find recent iterations of Elder Scrolls and Fallout to be watered-down or repetitive. However, for me, Skyrim and Fallout 4 were my first entries into both series so everything about Skyrim's world or the Nuclear Wasteland of Boston are entirely new to me. No game-mechanics or elements are old to the Series Newbie and therefore the disappointment of some die-hard-fans is lost on the new-to-the-series-initiate.

So what do you think? Are there games where you can see how some people might have Series Fatigue but you have Series Fandom or where you really enjoyed a game because you were a Series Newbie? You ever realize that you won't enjoy a game because you're bored of the series or that the review isn't accurate because you're new to the series??
