New Year's Day Traditions

Happy 2006 to everyone! Everyone has heard of making New Year's Resolutions, but here are some traditions from my family. My grandmother (who died before I was born) used to cook a big turkey dinner every New Year's Day and have friends and neighbors in, according to what my mother has told me. I think this is a good tradition, because New Year's Day is an extremely boring holiday in my opinion. But of course this was back in "the olden days", so I don't know how it would go over today. The next tradition is one I have followed all of my adult life, even though it is ridiculous! On New Year's Day, you must eat black eyed peas and you get good luck for every one you eat. So the more peas you eat, the more good luck you will have in the coming year. Could this have been invented to make people eat their black eyed peas? The last one I want to mention is also something I don't really believe. Whatever you are doing as the clock strikes the last stroke of midnight and the new year commences, you will be doing the rest of that year. But just in case it is true, I will try to make sure I am doing something good, lol! We are all from different backgrounds, of course. Are there any New Year's traditions different from these in your family?
