What a week! Tons of great news, lots of surprises - I love E3!! What did you think this week's highlights were?

Here's mine; ;)

New Games

  • Elite Beat Agents! (Ouendan was my #1 game of 2005, so to see it not only coming to America, but to be coming with new music/story/etc - it's even better! It's not so much a localization as it is a sequel! w00t!!)
  • Super Paper Mario! (Gamecube games at E3 fell completely off of everyone's radar, but this is one of the real gems of the show - a classic 2D Mario platformer set in the world of Paper Mario! Again - w00t!!)

The Console Wars

  • Everything Wii! Nintendo came out as the clear winner of this show, hands down. I've been a big supporter of the Wii since it was first unveiled way back when, and to see it in action along with countless unexpected surprises (The Zapper, the VC controller, SSBB, Mario Galaxy, the list goes on and on) was an absolute treat. This is exactly what Nintendo needed to do to get back on top. If they can produce enough, they'll be under every tree this Christmas. And despite what Reggie said about not announcing pricing, it's already in the upcoming issue of EGM - $249 boys and girls!! (Let's hope this is right, I'd hate for EGM to make me a liar..)
  • Microsoft Holds Their Own! With a solid lineup of upcoming games, both expected and announced (Gears of War, Halo 3, Alan Wake, Fable 2, GTA IV, Bioshock, Blue Dragon -- this list too, goes on and on) the 360 is standing on solid ground. There was nothing really earthshattering coming from the Microsoft camp, but there didn't need to be. All they had to do was wait and react to...
  • Sony Digs It's Own Grave! $500 for the CHEAP version?? The one without HDMI ports (thereby rendering Blu-Ray DVD's useless)?? Yipes.. And a last minute tilt sensitive controller (which, contrary to internet chatter, is NOTHING like the wiimote)?? Oh, and did I mention that unlike last year's hype, the game's don't look any better than the game's on the 360? Hope you enjoyed the decade on top. Time to go back to making Walkman's.

Sadly, I'm not surprised by this.  I really like this union, but there hasn't been much activity at all in the past little while.  I'm just as much to blame as everybody else.  We really need to kick it up a notch.

[QUOTE="lotr_2003"]I want to add an arcade game section but I do not know what arcade games I should add to the recommended list. Could someone tell me the titles that are worth it? Thank you!

Please do!  Speaking from personal experience, Geometry Wars, Smash TV and Zuma are all must have Live Arcade titles.  They should definitely be included.

Like I said in my last post, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is coming out for the PSP.
dcgames

Yeah, but Advent Children is a movie, not a game.  There is a game coming called FF: Crisis Core that's tied into FFVII, but nobody knows anything about it yet.  :(

As an owner of both, I really would like to come out and defend the PSP...  but I just can't think of a way too!  Everything that everyone is saying is right.  There are too many ports.  There are battery problems.  Etc, etc, etc...

But I still love it!  Don't get me wrong - the DS is a fantastic system too, but they're different systems and are both right for their own style of games.  The DS may offer innovative gameplay because of it's touch sensitive dual screen gameplay, but that doesn't mean innovative games won't be on the PSP!  Just take a look at Loco Roco and tell me that it isn't INSTANTLY on the top of your most wanted games list.

I think playing the PSP can be best summed up as taking the home console experience on the road with you.  That's something the DS just doesn't do.  I can rave and scream about how great Ouendan is until I'm blue in the face, but I can't bring the experience of Burnout or GTA with me on the go on the DS.  Everytime they try to do that on the DS, they fall flat on their face.  Just compare the versions of Ridge Racer and Burnout on each system and you'll see what I mean.

Oh!  An before I forget - if you're a puzzle junkie, the PSP has some good offerings beyond Lumines.  Ultimate Block Party plays like the spiritual successor to Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle League, and Archer Maclean's Mercury takes the Marble Madness/Super Monkey Ball style of gameplay and infuses it with colour matching puzzles that might drive you crazy!

And one last thing - for those of you looking for a great turn-based strategy game that really innovates in such a stale genre, Metal Gear Ac!d was a great launch title that for some reason was overlooked by most.  I can't wait for the sequel!

ahh, gotcha.  My bad!!  And you guys think you've got it bad - that $60 next-gen price tag is $70 for me!  (Plus we have a 15% sales tax - boo-urns.)

You're absolutely right though - I think the $10 price jump was an awful lot to expect out of consumers, and I think they're beginning to feel the backlash.  I've noticed some stores up here have already started to drop the prices on 360 titles by a few dollars here and there - it's probably the only way they can get these titles to move!

I'm pretty confident that the Revolution's titles will price the same as current gen titles - yet another leg up Nintendo's going to have on the competition this time around.  Hell - they have so many leg's up at this point that if they were a centipede they'd fall on their belly.

Plus, I think a lot of the reason behind the Sony delay is that they're learning from the mistakes of the 360.  I've read a great article recently about Sony's secret plan to compete in the low-price market.  If I can find it again I'll post it in a new thread - I'm sure it would spark a great discussion.

It really depends. I try not to limit myself in any specific fashion, but I play by the general rule of never pass up a great bargain.

Of course, as long as I have a stack of unplayed games waiting for me, it's fairly easy to resist the temptation to buy more. For example - my wife was very good to me this past Xmas and showered me with nearly a dozen games. I've barely made a dint into them, and as such I hadn't made a new game purchase this year until this past week. Of course, now I've been bitten by the shopping bug, and our income tax refund just came in. Lord help me! :S

I think what bothers me most about the financial part is that they keep the profits for themselves, of course, and they're pretty big margins.....and they keep it for what, stocking them? At least the developers make the games, and the customers are paying for them, but the middle man gets a big chunk....it's just very disappointing.Angelbabe531

That's true - but I think the same can probably be said for new games as well. I don't think stores like EB would be in business if there wasn't a significant markup on new product. I wish I had some solid info to back me up on this, but I've got a hunch that the difference between what the wholesale and MSRP prices probably isn't that different than the gap between trade-in value and resale.

I think we can all safely agree without ruffling anyone's feathers that capitalism is the root of all evil. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to an undisclosed Central American country where you don't need quarters in the arcades! :P

[QUOTE="dcgames"]I would have to go out and get the word "STUPID" tattooed on my forehead if I spent $60 on a video game.

Just to clarify - the $60 I mentioned in my big long crazy post is $60 Canadian. In video game terms, a game that retails $49.99 in the US is $59.99 up here.
