I work at gamestop and I had a kid who was probably ten pick up far cry 3. I told the mother that is was rated M for this and that and she was ok with it. I would never let a ten year old kid play an M rated game let alone far cry 3. Parent's apathy and lack of knowledge about the esrb are what's causing problems. They're so quick to blame the game instead of themselves.
If Epic decided to make a Gears game with Anya as the main character as opposed to Marcus, or in the case of the new one, Baired, I would still play it. It would still be Gears of War, and Anya is a badass. I don't see how it would be "hard to justify".
