I remember a time when you could walk in and pick up a video game console without any problems. I did that for the Atari 7800, Coleco Vision, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and even the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Something happened after that. The Nintendo 64 was in shorter supply then it could meet. I remember that being the first pre order console I have ever had. As gaming became more popular initial production couldn't meet the needs of everyday consumers. Early adopters found themselves playing games just to be able to play games. Everything from be first in line, to call in a fake fight to secure my place became the norm. What has happened to this industry? Where has it come from and where is it headed?
