2012(happy new year btw), had a lot of good games and games that anybody of their likings could say they derserved 2012's GOTY. It is all really based on opinion. There are fans for all types of games, whether it be shooters, platformers, RPG's, Arcade Racers or hand combats, what do we get from the actual experience from these games? Sure there are different types of games out there that people prefer, but you can never really say that a particular genre of a game is "better" than another, it all really comes down to the games in those genres.
I was recently in EBgames and was talking to one of their staff. We were just talking about video games, the tragedy of what had happened in Newtown, CT. and the age groups(underage) who are playing M rated games. He told me that at the midnight premiere of Battlefield 3, 3 quarters of the line for the game were kids from the ages 7 - 11. I wasn't startled by the fact that these age groups were playing such games high in maturity level(once again, opinion), but i was surprised at the fact a lot of the kids who bought the game came back to the store and said they, "expected it to be totally different" and they "didn't like it" and actually traded the game for something else. The truth is, it doesn't even matter what age you are, maybe age appropriate games like Mario and Zelda(which of course can still be played by Teens and Adults of course) is more what they would likely to be playing. Most of these kids didn't have an interest in battlefield, most of them probably bought the game because their friends were playing it and thought they would be "cool" if they had it. But why? The contents of the game, we live in a society, where a lot of kids think that video games with violence, killing and mature content is the only good thing out there and aren't willing to take a chance to try something else rather than the hand-combat or shoot-em-up games. The kids whose friends were playing battlefield 3 might have been older or the same age, it just goes to show that an adult may have difficulty with or not like battlefield, but a kid might, it is all opinion. My friend is used to playing Call Of Duty, says that "If it's not a shooter, it's terrible." After playing Little Big Planet with him on the PS3(which most people would say is a "kids" game). he completley changed his mind and actually went out and bought the game.

Now, my thoughts on this years Gamespot GOTY, "Journey". Journey, to me, is an all around a diverse, unique, compelling, beautifully looking and sounding game, unlike I have ever really played before. It was more of an off road turn for me since I am more a arcade-racer, fps, rpg guy. But the truth is, i had a great time with this game even though it was kind of out of my league. Sure, any other game could of won this year but for those who say this shouldn't have been GOTY and haven't even played it...play it. I guarantee you will have a great time with it. A game doesn't have to be in your genre to have a good time with it. It goes for any game, you just have to take risks to appreciate all sorts of game types.
So, the point of this article is, not just to take chances and risks in games, but in life to, maybe something you think you might not like because your not used to it you should try, because you never know....you might just like it.
