The machine works, laser works, no scratches, reads DVDs fine. But if you try a 360 or regular xbox game it just shows a screen that says, "to play this disc put it into an xbox 360," yes i did double check and it was in fact, a 360. Once on the dashboard when you have a disc in the drive, the bottom option that normally says "play (whatever game) instead just says play DVD. I took the machine as far apart as i could so that it still works, (looks kinda neat!) and I have the shell and disc drive cover off so i could watch the laser, and Inoticed that when there is a DVD in the drive the laser automatically searches the whole disc, (moves all the way up and down) but for some reason when there is a game in the drive, the laser does not move at all, just goes straight to the error screen. Also, if you hit a button on the controller while in this error screen the dvd control menu pops up, which is what leads me to believe that the system is just stuck on the wrong format, so can this be reset somewhere somehow? So... for some reason the console is not recognizing that it is in fact supposed to be playing that format, so how can this be fixed? Could changing the disc drive help? or would it just go to the same screen because there is some sort of data corruption to the motherboard? I am looking for some suggestions, obviously there is no warranty on it and I'm trying to see if i can fix it for free. i know the games all work because i have another xbox that they all work on. Ive also heard about, and seen on youtube, a code that can be entered in the system menu to do basically a system reboot, but everyone has a different code so it must be console specific, anyone know if this code may work, or on how to get it? thanks everyone :) - J

ok man, thanks for the replies, I've been watching and reading all sorts of interesting things, I'm kind of interested in finding out how i can find the right master reset code, I've seen sever different versions, something similar to : go to console settings then system info then input x , x , LB , RB, x , x or something like that and Ive seen videos on youtube of people doing it, but every site has a different code so how do i find the right one? i have no idea if this will reset the damn thing correctly or not but i figured it worth a shot if i can find the one i need! can anyone help me figure it out?

yes i did check the lens, it was fine, crystal clear with no scratches... and i know for sure that all the games work as i have another 360 that everything plays on, i got this xbox for nothing because the person could not get it to work, so i figured i would have a go at it. but i dont think that replacing the drive would change anything, would it? it works fine when it plays dvds, but not for games, seems like it might be a setting somewhere but im not sure. on the dashboard when there is a game in the tray it says "play DVD" instead of the usual "play (whatever game you have in there) so it seems to me like there is a programming bug somewhere. does the DVD drive have any actual storage of data on it that replacing it would change anything?or does it just read the disc and send the info to the board? im not positive how the things technically work.. lol im just good at playing em :)

ok so i have this xbox 360, and it will work to play dvd's, but it will not read any xbox360 or regular xbox games that i have tried, (about 15 in total that I've tried). I only seem to get the "to play this disc put it in an xbox 360 console fix." I have already cracked it open because the warranty was already voided so i didnt care, and got the cover off of the drive so i can watch the laser and check it for scratches. i didnt think there was a problem with the laser to begin with as it plays regular dvd's just fine. now when you put in a dvd the laser searches the whole disc (moves all the way back and forth) and then plays the movie, but i noticed that when an xbox (or 360) game gets put in the laser does not move at all. why would this be? is this some form of corrupt format? why does the laser search when i put in a dvd and not with a game? doesnt seem to make sense to me... but its like the drive just doesnt have the xbox OS on it or something? or maybe just stuck in WILL ONLY PLAY DVD format and if so how can that be fixed? i want to see if i can fix it here at my house, any help or suggestions would be great! thanks - justin
