I'm really hoping someone from HP reads this thread. For every happy customer, there seems to be at least 1 unhappy customer. I'm really hoping HP will do something about their staff training. Funny thing is, I posted my initial complaint in the HP forums and had someone reply immediately saying they'd experienced almost exactly the same thing with the HP helpdesk staff. Starting to think I'm not alone here...

I've had my HP laptop for 3 years now and it works just fine for me. I've had no major problems with it at all.

what he said

If the laptop works, then u're lucky, but the problem is when it DOESN'T work and u have to deal with the Indian helpdesks. For anyone who's thinking of buying a new laptop, bear that in mind...

I've had an HP laptop for years and haven't had a single problem with it. I also know someone who works in a laptop repair center and they hardly ever get HP's in...they get mostly Toshiba's in...Sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience, but I think your case is one in, oh I don't know, a million maybe?

Plus, I've called up 4-5 times and received the same treatment each time, i.e. having to describe the problem each time, refusal to believe that the HDD was ever replaced due to poor case notes, and being told that Vista Home Premium is the standard Windows that ships with my laptop!

I haven't had too many problems with the local techs (I'm in Australia), aside from the fact that they installed the wrong version of Vista and replaced the HDD twice even though I told them not to bother with it the 2nd time, but it's the offshore helpdesk staff that are causing me grief. It took a 50 minute phone call to get them to raise a ticket for a service technician to look at it...

Make sure all your drivers are updated to the latest versions would be the first thing I would do. This might solve the problem.

Yea, I've done that, and updated to the latest BIOS version as well. I'm 99.9% sure it's the RAM or motherboard.

Yea, their customer service is among the worst I've ever experienced. They also wouldn't replace the laptop even though it's within the 12 month warranty period cos they refuse to believe it's a hardware error, so they keep reimaging the HDD. The worst thing is that they don't write down the case notes properly, so there's no record of anything that happened. I've had to explain the same thing to about 10 different people! Note: HP don't tell u this, but they will ONLY replace a faulty laptop within 30 days of purchase. Anything longer than that and it's up to their discretion as to whether or not they want to replace it!!! Anyway, I think I'll go with Asus or Dell next time. Anyone had any bad experiences with them?

OK, I've been struggling with my HP Pavillion laptop for almost a year now. The problem is that I'm getting intermittent BSODs. It happens mostly during gaming, but also happens randomly while surfing the net, working on Word or Excel documents. Anyway, I've sent the laptop back twice. They replaced the HDD twice and the same thing still happens, yet they still insist it's a software problem. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that after 2 reimages and 2 HDDs that it's some other hardware issue. Anyway, the 2nd time it came back with the wrong operating system. I purchased Vista Ultimate 64 bit and it came back with Home Premium 32 bit. They had the nerve to tell me I never purchased Vista Ultimate and that they didn't make a mistake. I'm going to try to send it back a 3rd time, but they said all they can do is reimage the HDD and see if the problem still happens. I've literally wasted hours on the phone with them, so I'm going to write this off and buy a new laptop.

My advice to everyone out there is to NEVER buy an HP laptop. If you do, then you'll regret it if you ever have to deal with their helpdesk. I'm trying to spread the word to save everyone the pain!

After days of tweaking and even RMA-ing my video card, I finally resolved the issue. I think it was a BIOS problem. With this motherboard, if you set all of the voltages to auto, I don't think it supplies enough power to the RAM. I was using BIOS revision 0404 which has a few bugs, i.e. I set the voltage to 1.8V and it was still only supplying 1.5V to the RAM, hence the random crashes. Have since upgraded to BIOS 0501 and the problem is fixed. I hope this helps someone else with the same problem.
