would the PS3 recovery menu help with this issue?

recently i purchased a samsung 500gb SATA 2.5" HDD (3gb/s) but when i place it in the PS3 (fat 40gb) it says the correct hard disk is not found. do i need jumpers and how do you use them? would i need to get a new HDD?
