The Jack Thompson debate.

Aaah yes, violience in video games.  The newest trend the latest fad the biggest bandwagon.  Is Doom a training application for 16 year old kids to utilize before they go and shoot up their school?  If you play Grand Theft Auto are you destined to shoot cops, rape hookers, and run over pedestrians?  Don't make me laugh.

Seriousely out the millions (yes millions) how many cases have their been of these events unfolding after a kid gets a hold of a violent video game?  I am guessing less than 1%.  I am also guessing that in that less than one percentile their are much bigger issues in that persons life than a violent video game.  Acutally I take that back, I am not guessing, I am 100% sure of it.

If all of what Jack Thompsan has said had even an inkling of truth, then by his definition I should sucking up the gas chamber right now or getting injected with some lethal poison.  I have 'trained' on Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3.  I have passed GTA's course of running pedestrians over with flying colors. I have even had my legs cut off in Quake 4.  Guess how many times I have been in a police car in the 27 years of my life.  Once, he was giving me a lift to the gas station after my car broke down in a serious blizzard.  I have many friends who play video games, and many friends who don't.  The friends that do play video games are usually too busy playing video games to go out and get into any actual trouble while the ones that don't are the ones with the criminal records.

Screw the statistics, screw the psycholagists (they are all crazy anyways).  I go by personal example and what I see and hear on a personal level.  Not some number a news station spouts at me.  If you like those numbers though, then why has crime gone down on a significant level in the last few years?  Again, if what Jack Thompsan says bears any truth whatsover, shouldn't the crime rate be quadrupling each time a violent video game comes out?

Jack Thompsan "In bully you punch, kick, and dunk other kid's heads in the toilet."

Mark Friedler : "My kids punch and kick each other all the time and their too young to play video games."

The truth is, violence is in our nature, it has been since biblical times when Cane killed Able.  If anything, video games are a release for these tendancies and an outlet for us.  If anything, I believe violent video games reduce violence, not create it.
