I built my rig for about £400. $640. I have a Intel Pentium Dual Core. 2G of RAM and a 8800GT. People may say my rig isn't great but i can play STALKER Clear Sky no lag. I can also Play Far Cry 2, Cod4, Rainbow six Vegas 2, assasins Creed, Mass effect and GTA 4 and have no problems. Poiint is mate. You don't need to fork out extortionate amounts of money to get persormance from your PC. I would reccomend building your PC.

It may not be that much cheaper but then at least you then have a good knowledge of the computer and if something goes wrong you can address the problem yourself. I built mine by myself and i'm 16.

You really need to get some new RAM. Buying a new hard drive won't dramaticaly improve the speed of your computer.Therefore don't bother with the harddrive unless you need more space. Build a computer with a lower lower Spec CPU then buy a more souped up GPU. That would staisfy you more than buying a processor with components that can't keep up.

get War Craft then when you're confident enough try star craft.

I enjoyed the war craft campaign more but Star Craft game play is alot more strategy based. If you want a true RTS than Star Craft is the best.

I like to tech up. But only the improvements that will directly improve my army.

do you mean you changed the screen res so small you couldn't change it back because you couln't se the menu or what?

Is it easy to play with a mouse and Keyboard or would it be better with a x box controller?
