the best thing about gothic3 is its open-endedness. most people say you can only join the orcs or rebels, forgetting the other factions...druids, desert rangers, hashishin, water mages, clans in nordmar...also, xardas is almost a faction by himself.
there is really just so much to do in this game without even following quests, which is what i loved, the exploration.
make sure you download all three patches and check out the jowood forums for technical support. they'll tell you the best ways to get good performance from the game, but it does take some ini tweaking, which most casual gamers seem to not take kindly to.
its got quirks, npcs are subtler than in hollywood games. there are underlying themes beyond merely good vs evil, its all very interesting. essentially there is no 'right' way. once you get to know each faction's motives, it gets really interesting. they are all very tangled up in their affairs. my advice is to play the game exploring don't just jump in and choose a faction. play it, explore, learn about the world, its not fed to you on a plate like linear games, it kind of sits back and lets you decide and then things change as a result of that. or you can remain completely neutral, i mean entirely neutral right to the end.
combat took some getting used to, its not the best system, because spamming is actually a lot easier than planning your attacks, bit unbalanced in that. magic is the best way to go eventually, its a bit of work though. once you learn mana regen you pwn.
hmm, bit of a long post, but i really really enjoyed playing this game, hope you do too!
