January, I graduated from university with my bachelors degree, psychology.
February, I quit my job and left for a holiday. Unfortunately while skiing in Japan, I broke my leg. Both my tibia and fibula.
When I got back home to Australia, I had surgery. A titanium rod put through my tibia with a couple of screws. I've been walking again for 4 weeks or so now. It felt like an eon, but in reality it was a pretty quick recovery, broken legs can be much worse. Besides, I think its kind of cool to have titanium in my leg and through an entire bone, like wolverine or something.
So now I'm back on my feet, I've joined a gym to both be healthier in general and also help with any muscle atrophy from being bedbound while my leg healed. I need to start job hunting too. Need to support myself, but at the same time I don't really want a career with my degree, I want to play music for a living..

Do androids dream of electric sheep?
by macca366 on Comments
I was just made to watch Blade Runner director's cut up in an apartment on a big television with nice surround sound and so forth. It was cool. Someone send me the Philip K. Dick novel it was based on to read.
I read that it was panned for its pacing being too slow, but if anything I felt that it was rushed and could have been longer and more fleshed out. Harrison Ford wasn't bad, I think although it was fairly ambiguous, that Ridley Scott intended it to be that Deckard was a replicant, with the scene at the end where he finds the little paper unicorn.
Rutger Hauer's acting was fantastic as Roy. I'll admit I cringed a lot when he was killing Tyrell though. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."
Pris was kind of.. sexy. Although I was thinking she could have been like a groupie that followed the Sex Pistols around. The mixture of retro and futuristic in old sci-fi movies is always interesting. The technology does things that are futuristic, yet their idea of what technology should look like is dated compared to what we're used to now, everything looks like chunky old VCR's glued together and stuff.
The romance between Deckard and Rachael is another reason why it could have been longer. That didn't seem too fleshed out at all to me, although I did like it anyway, I'm a sucker for romance sub-plots perhaps, especially forbidden kind. I didn't expect Deckard and Rachael to make love to each other though, I don't think I really thought about whether that sort of physical intimacy with her was possible if she was a replicant, or what emotions - if any - she as an android would have felt. I guess the movie's lasting strength was the questions and blurred lines between what is human and what is unhuman though. I can't blame Deckard for kissing her though.
Something about it reminded me of a concept art image I'd seen for System Shock 2, as well as Deus Ex. But it makes sense as I read that Warren Spektor was influenced greatly by Blade Runner for his vision of the original Deus Ex. He also worked on the original System Shock. slightly reminds of when I went out at night when I was in Tokyo
Cafe Job - Amateur Barista
by macca366 on Comments
I have recently began working at a cafe.
I do everything but cook. Cleaning tables, sweeping regularly, washing dishes, serving food and so forth.
But predominantly, my main job is making all of the coffee. So essentially, I'm working as a barista.
The cafe is right in the heart of the city, and it is the first time I have ever worked in a cafe before, or tried putting the coffee making skills
I learnt a while ago into professional practice. I use the word professional lightly, because, I could certainly stand to be better.
The experience is invaluable, and I know that the centre of the CBD is the most busy a cafe is probably ever going to get, so if I can handle it there, I can handle anywhere.
The worst part of the job is probably standing around not seeing anything that I could be doing to help, feeling useless, knowing the boss is watching.
The best part of the job is pouring a beautiful latte I know is good, or a great looking cappuccino. Or when I see someone come back more than once during the day for another coffee; one that I made.
Movie Appreciation - Aliens
by macca366 on Comments
I had seen Aliens before, a few years ago, but my memory of the film was virtually non-existent until I decided to sit down and actually
I can clearly recall the first movie in the Alien trilogy, Alien, due to having seen it multiple times and perhaps more so because of the tenseness and fear it made me feel upon my first viewing. It was a more claustrophobic, terror-you-can't-see kind of film, and in its essence it is actually a monster film - with the focus being around a single antagonist.
Aliens, is departure from the formula of its predecessor. A departure that I were aware of before the film was released, and were the movies video games instead of cinema, I would of been concerned about - much akin to playing the original Dead Space and enjoying it, and perhaps hearing that Dead Space 2 is to be more action-oriented and less frightening. However, Cameron's takeover of the IP Scott began directing paid off in spades, in my opinion.
Aliens certainly isn't as scary as its prequel was, at all, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable, or not comfortably fit into the universe. The greater scope of the movie and the introduction of the trigger-happy marines don't diminish its quality at all, in fact enhancing it. The action only serves to electrify more stimulation into the experience, and the way the characters have a better fighting chance against the threat instead of only being sitting ducks you're expecting to die turns it into a survival horror of sorts. I find it allows you to root for the protagonists. The slim chance you feel is there for survival due to preparation, equipment and training has you on the edge of your seat waiting or wanting to see them pull it off, instead of you being on the edge of your seat waiting for the next person to inevitably die.
I also love the sets and production. The absence of a total reliance on CGI is extremely healthy. All of the set pieces, machinery, the surface of the planet and so forth look believable and have a real-world quality to them. I feel as though I'm looking at actual material objects, as opposed to being aware that I'm looking at things that are completely generated by computers.
Of course a notable difference from Alien, is that there isn't just one alien. There is an entire hive.
..Its awesome. watch it the other night. I enjoy sci-fi, but as of now I have to say that Aliens is my favourite, and in my opinion one of the very top sci-fi movies ever made.
