Gamespot has given out 7 perfect scores from 6 games (GTA 4 had two different versions) since its founding many years ago. 3 of the 7 have been given in 2008 with them being MGS4 and both versions of GTA 4 though that could increase with the PC version of the game later in November.
However its my opinion that no game should ever get given a maximum score for the simple reason that no game is perfect and we should not diluate what a perfect score means just to please our fanboy cravings, especially from critics whose dayjob is to review and fairly judge games. The people behind the perfect 10 score for both versions of GTA 4 and the 4th Metal Gear installment came out and said that 10 out of 10 does not mean the game is perfect but then I must question why the Gamespot website has the subtitle of perfect next to the score of 10. Gamespot and anyone else who gives out 10's to any game cannot have there cake and eat it so either a perfect score means perfect or you just don't give them out.
In any part of society, 100% or 10 out of 10 means perfect so why should games be different just to please one's fanboy habits. The problem is the new Gamespot grading system, which makes jumps of 0.5 instead of 0.1, so they must of felt that 9.5 was too low and decided to give GTA 4 & MGS 4 a perfect 10. In my opinion, I feel the current system works but once a game reaches 9.5 the next jump should be in 0.1 so games can get between 9.6 and 10 for a more balanced review.
Let me just say I do not hate GTA 4 or MGS 4 and I own and for the most part enjoyed GTA 4 on the 360 system. While I have not played the 4th Metal Gear game due to not having a Playstation 3, I am a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 so this blog has nothing to do with hating those games. Personally I have never given out a higher rating than 9.0 to any game and infact only 10 games in total have ever achieved that rating with those being...
* Metal Gear Solid
* Metal Gear Solid 2
* Goldeneye 007
* Call of Duty
* Call of Duty 2
* Call of Duty 4
* F.E.A.R
* Perfect Dark
* Assassins Creed
* Mass Effect
Maybe the biggest reason that I feel no game should ever get a perfect score is that once a perfect game is created, what is the point of any more games being made and the same goes for all aspects in life because we strive to always to do better and most of the time its not reaching the goal that we enjoy but how we get there. If perfection was achievable then we would have nothing left and life would be very boring with nothing more to aim for but lucky for us, nothing in the entire Universe is capable of being truthfully perfect.
