My new website

Hi everybody!

I know I haven't been writing a lot recently, but I partially broke my wrist and my moving capacities have been limited.

I announce you today that my movie and TV reviews will soon be published on my newest website: http://www.freewebs.com/peterrhydon

There's not a lot of things on it right now since I'm very busy (college, you know) but I'm doing my best to post my articles as soon as possible.

See you soon!

The logo of shame

There are no Olympic Games this year, but it doesn't mean that we cannot talk about that. In July 2007, the IOC will elect the city which will host the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. And it appears that it's the city of PyeongChang in South Korea that is going to be elected.

In a different (and sadder) register, it's only a few weeks ago that the organization of the 2012 London Olympic Games unveiled the official logo for the event. The unveilment acted like a stinking bomb and with reason.

Because the logo is horrible, ugly, and worst of all: shameful. We often say that we wouldn't like at someone else's place... Well, I can tell you that at this very moment, I wouldn't like to be English because I would be ashamed.

And many English people are also ashamed. 83% of the people who answered to a poll have given the worst possible rating to the controversial logo. I would have done so as well.

The logo, not only is it ugly, it doesn't have any artistic value, doesn't represent anything and is adressed to absolutely nobody. It's only an incomprehensible $800 million waste which only adds garlic on the delicious cake that is supposed to be the upcoming games in the English capital.

Many columnists tried to find out what the logo was supposed to mean. And their theories, which go from the broken window to the silhouette of a girl performing oral sex, are not totally crazy.

I invite you to go to the following website, so you could vote against that logo and urge the organizators to modify that horror. The Games are supposed to celebrate the best of human nature, not the worst of it.

Wanna play classic Sonic games?

I'm so happy. I've just completed the final levels of Sonic 2 on my computer. And let me tell you that the final zone (Death Egg) isn't a piece of cake. There are two very tough bosses and there isn't any ring to collect and to be protected by. You need patience, lightning-fast reflexes and good gaming skills to complete the final level.

I know there's one question you're asking to yourself: how can I play Sonic 2 on my computer? It has only been released on early Sega game consoles in the early 90s.

Well, Internet has a lot of treasures. There's a website called CoolROM.com (www.coolrom.com). It contains emulators which allow gamers who only own computers to get games released on other consoles. It's there that I got many classic games and you could as well if you visit that fantastic website.

Now that I've just completed Sonic 2, I will now try to play something else...

Cory Lidle is dead

I just can't believe it. It was almost unthinkable that a plane still could hit a building in Manhattan, but it happened. Just by the plane's size, the building it hit and the weather, it was clear that it was an accident and not a terrorist attack. The moment that really shocked me is when I learned that the plane's pilot was none other than New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle. It could have been any other player and it would still have been shocking, but the fact that it was Lidle adds something special to the tragedy. That's because Lidle was one of the players in my team on my baseball pool. I now face that situation: one of my players is dead in a plane crash. I just can't figure it. It's still crazy in my mind. This fact shows that nobody can escape to their destiny. Neither the baseball players. Lidle had a big salary, he played with the most famous baseball team in history and he was one of the great pitchers of the major league. And still he got killed in that plane crash...

Roeper & Smith on August 13th

Last week, on August 6th, Jay Leno replaced Roger Ebert for the ''Ebert & Roeper'' show and he promptly deserved a thumbs-up, proving his skills, not only as a show host, but as a film critic. He was fairly, fairly good.

Yesterday, on August 13th, Ebert's seat was taken by Kevin Smith, who directed movies like ''Jay & Silent Bob'', ''Clerks'' and ''Jersey Girl''. Because he was a guest host (and we don't invite anybody at this show), my expectations were high, once again.

Well, let me tell you that Smith disappointed me somehow. He wasn't as interesting as Leno, who was there the week before. His general presentation could have been more groomed.

I don't know who will be there next Sunday, but I hope that this guest will be more like Leno than Smith.

Big thumbs up for Jay Leno!

I was writing a comment for the movie "The Abyss", which I watched a few hours ago, when I had to stop because I didn't want to miss Jay Leno filling in for Roger Ebert's chair in the "Ebert & Roeper" show. I had great expectations for Jay Leno. I've heard about his capacities and I was curious to see if he could do the job adequately. Let me tell you that when I began to watch the show, I couldn't stop myself from watching the screen. Leno's opinions were very sharp and lucid and the great talk-show host played his role like if he had done that all his life. He really looked like a professional critic. He had some great chemistry with Richard Roeper and their already famed "Shadowboxer" disagreement will stay remembered by all show's watchers. For sure I want Roger Ebert to be back, but having some guests like Leno is very pleasant. My expectations for Leno are fulfilled, it's Kevin Smith's time next week...

Peter Rhydon and the movies

Some of you have read my recent reviews on TV.com and I'm happy about that. It's gratifying to see that I don't do this just for myself. However, if you like my TV comments, you would probably like my movie comments as well. Yes, I'm writing movie reviews too! So far, I've written about 30 comments on the respected site imdb.com (the Internet Movie Database) and I hope that I will soon write enough reviews to be ranked as a prolific authors (100 reviews or more). Don't search for my real name, I write my reviews under the Peter Rhydon pseudonym. My movie reviews are listed at this adress: http://imdb.com/user/ur4998619/comments So if you want to read my reviews, or if you want to become a film reviewer as well, please go to imdb.com If you just want to find some information on movies or the film business, this is a really good place for that too... Enjoy!

Sonic X 3: Blaze, Nazo and the Babylon Rogues?

I've read some interesting news on the Wikipedia website, which indicate some aspects of a potential new Sonic X season. It has been confirmed that Sonic X won't be in 4kids fall schedule, but it might air during the course of the season. I can't be sure of that part. In the case of the third season, according to Wikipedia and Sonic HQ, there are all kinds of rumours, including those ones: Blaze may encounter Blaze the Cat (from Sonic Rush) in the beginning of the season, as well as the mysterious Nazo (yeah, that one) and some rumours also include an adaptation of Sonic Riders, which would mean that Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow and Storm the Albatross might be in the next Sonic X. But I remind you that these are only rumours. So I don't want to be called a wrong-caller. But as we say, there's no smoke without fire. So Sonic X fans, cross your fingers... Goodbye Sonic

I can't tell you how much I was sad when I saw that Sonic X wasn't going to be aired on the Saturday morning programmation. It's at this moment that I knew that the Sonic X adventure was ended and maybe for good. I'm very sad, but I have to say myself that it had to happen. I mean, there are a lot of series that just wait for being aired and I know that they need to have their chance. So, it was just a matter of time. What saddens me even more is that I've only watched the second season episodes (53-78 ). I've missed the other 52 and I think I would regret it for a long time. It's just that I began to be interested in Sonic in May 2005, so a long time after the first episode was aired. There's also the fact that, in the province of Quebec, Sonic X DVD's are not for sale, so I can't buy them. The only way I could own them is to order them by eBay, but I'm not sure of its efficiency and it seems very complicated. So I think that I have to content myself of the Season 2 episodes that I've taped when they aired this fall and this winter. Now I know that I own precious gems. I just hope that the next Sonic series (if there's one) won't take 10 years before it airs...

Long live the Remparts!

Do you know Canadian junior hockey? If not, it's no big deal. I'm just talking about that, because it was the big championship this weekend. The Memorial Cup, as it is named, reunites four teams. Usually there are the winners of the three local leagues championships (West, Ontario and Quebec & East), plus the host team. This year, there have been the West and Ontario, just like it's supposed to be, but the East champions were also the host team, so the other team was the finalist team of Quebec championship. But it's the latter team who won the Cup. The team is the Quebec City Remparts. They're lead by a certain Patrick Roy. Those who follow should know that Roy is one of the greatest goaltenders of all time and he became coach after he retired. Quebec & East league is little known in hockey business, but it produces players who become superstars. Recent players include Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richars, Sidney Crosby, Marc-André Fleury, Michael Ryder etc. All this is for saying that I'm really proud of the Remparts and I hope them the best of luck for next season. Have a nice day!
