Going Dark on Sep 30th

Yes, I will be gone dark and not logging into the site on Sep 30th. This is being done to protest incompetent site changes, which I aalso heartily dislike. For more info about "going dark" refer to Glenn11523's blog: http://www.tv.com/users/Glenn11523/profile.php?action=show_blog&entry=m-100-25543402

Can't Moderate

If you have subs and you are waiting for me to moderate them, I would like to let you know that the system will not let me moderate them at this time. Sorry, but this problem seems to have been caused by the recent site upgrade.

Quotes... Quotes... Quotes

Personally I love quotes. I love reading them and I love creating them. The quotes on the episode guides in this site are some of the best things about a show guide. Frankly, I also love that some episodes in show guides have a lot of quotes. This does not bother me at all. What I don't like are quotes that are incomplete, don't make sense, or don't stand alone outside the context of the dialogue of the episode. The other thing I don't like is when quotes are inaccurate. So, if you are going to submit quotes, at least make sure they are accurate. This is pretty simple to do... you watch the episode on your VCR/PVR and you transcribe the words that are said by the character(s). Most times you have to back up and check the wording, but it is worth it... you get a wonderful and accurate quote that you can submit to a show guide. As an editor I have often accepted quotes without checking them for accuracy. Sure, I check them for spelling and formatting but I do not personally replay the episode and check the wording. Lately I have started to do this and I have found many inaccuracies in quote submissions. So, I have had to deny many quotes recently. Here is the bottom line -- If you submit inaccurate quotes you might as well not submit the quote at all. If you copy your quotes from other sites and submit them on this site, you are not doing this site a service. Please submit accurate quoates.

Regular Level Updates Return

I hope that eveyone has been seeing the same daily level updates that I have been seeing lately. Frankly, it is nice to see the regular level updates return to the tv.com community. This must be especially nice to those lower level users who are trying to level up. I would like to say to whomever is responsible for fixing this nagging problem: Good JOB! Keep up the good work!

Back up to my old level

Hey, today I am back up to the same level I was about 5 weeks ago! It took a while. Maybe I can make level 56 before I get dropped down again. :) Otherwise, everything is sort of normal around here. It is kind of quiet though. Right now my queue is pretty full and I need to clear it -- but that will have to wait as I am going out for the day.

I salute the optimists... but does anyone else feel what I feel?

First of all, I salute the optimists on this site. That is, those of you that always seem to see the bright side of life and feel that things will improve if everyone has the right attitude and a patient resolve. To be clear, I am currently not an optimist. That being said, does anyone really think that things on this site will get better? Nothing has ever gotten better on this site. It just gets worse and worse. There is a true and honest trend that if we all stopped and took a look at things we will all realize that this site is slowly but surely spiralling downwards. The levels have never been fixed. Despite the promises, and our waiting patiently, the level problems have never been fixed. In fact the problems seem to get worse and worse. Presently, levels do not even attempt to run. There is absolutely no level increase. As well, any promise by tv.com staff to fix the problem (or to unveil a new level system) should be met by a large degree of skepticism in my opinion. Nothing they have done recently has worked, and history tells us that there is no hope of it ever working. Okay enough of a rant. Where's the solution? From my point of view, the current tv.com staff has proven themselves to be lacking. The promises of "fixes" which lead to "no fix". The lack of communications, especially around the level problems. And the rollout of new features which have glaring problems, which tells us that these features have not been tested at all. If I was in charge of tv.com, heads would surely roll. New staff would be hired. I am not pointing any fingers because I do not know the staff well enough, but someone is lacking and they should be sent packing.

I just want to scream

I just tried to make three simple subs to the "On the Lot" guide. It took me anout 30 minutes. One of the subs (guest cast addition) never went through. The other subs went through, but only after many retries and cryptic errors. This place is so screwed up I am ready to quit. Normally I could have made the updates to the episode in about 5 minutes tops.

New Submission System Needs Work

My advice to anyone is to not submit until this system gets improved.

  • I spent about 10 minutes this morning just simply adding stars to a single episode of "On the Lot. The old system took about 15 seconds to do this.
  • I cannot edit any guest stars or crew for any episodes. I can add them, but I cannot change them. The only thing we can change is the stars.
  • I added a trivia blurb for a "The Loop" episode and it is automatically being styled with a set of paragraph tags. This is causing some irregular spacing.
  • Items in my queue do not indicate the episode anymore. How do I know which episode these subs are going to? This is pretty important. So far it is a guessing game.
  • Who wants to get a PM every time they submit a sub to a guide?

The new system is just awful! Any critical web site system such as this should have been thoroughly tested before being rolled out. What a surprise that tv.com rolled out such a piece of work as this. it is not like we are not use to their incompetence. For example: I do not know how many times in the past 12 months that we have been promised fixes to the level system, and every time they try to fix it it gets worse. At least the levels actually ran last summer. This summer they do not even run anymore -- it is just like they gave up.

The new cast and crew editor is the worst problem of the bunch. I think that the other problems can likely get sorted out -- but this new cast and crew editor is a huge problem that I predict will not be sorted anytime soon.

TV.com Chat

Every chat I attend here at TV.com is ridiculously marred by kids chatting about anything and everything except for the topic at hand.  It is like they need a kids chat room, and a separate place for the adults to actually chat about the show.

That's all I have to say about the matter.
