If you want to develop an IOS game you'll need an iPhone. Or you can get an iPad. It's goot to get the latest versions of them if you can (iPhone 5 or iPad 4). The Mac simulator is kind of slow and you may have difficulties to test your game without a device

I guess that, before buying an adventure game (or any kind of game for that matter) you should also check comments that other players make about the game, besides only reading the reviews. And is good, that this days, on most of the games you can watch gameplay videos and it helps you get a better idea about how the game is played. Better that a trailer... :) And is also good, when possible, to try a demo of the game
Yes, a PC game should be made in a way that it can be played good with the mouse and keyboard. But, sometimes the developers don't do a great job :) Or the game is just simply better played with a gamepad. And looks like Dark Souls goes into this category...
Yes, Allan Wake - has great story, looks good... And I also like the music in it And Dead Island is fun. But in Allan Wake the atmosphere is more intense
