The console wars are off to a start in the Americas and in Southeastern countries (Japan, China, and Korea) as Europe constantly wait for the launch of the Wii for this year and the PS3 which will launch early 2007 due to delays. The consoles are off to good and not-so-good starts for the holiday season.
First, the Xbox 360. Right now at the console war standings, the 360 is at the top of its game right now. Developers have made games like Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas and more to not only produce their high quality graphics, but how they show them with awesome gameplay. The 360 has also released their DVD drive recently owners can watch movies and download TV shows on their Xbox 360. Though prices of the 360's core AND pro systems have decreased over the past year, the prices are still just a teeny bit high but just right for those fanboys out there. Titles like Gears of War for the 360 has obviously proved itself and the Americas as one of the must-have titles for the 360 this year and also one of the must-have titles overall. The future of Microsoft in the videogame industry looks bright! The 360 has a fabulous momentum going on right now and I think they're gonna stand strong the following years. Let us not forget the long-awaited title Halo 3 which will hopefully come soon!
Ahh, the PS3. Logitech PS3 contoller, $40. PS3 component cables, $70. SixAxis PS3 controller, $50. PS3 console, $500-$600. Getting shot by refusing to give up your wallet while waiting in line for a PS3, getting trampled in line, stealing PS3's, and getting mugged by guys in ski masks.....priceless. Sure, the PS3's $600 maximum price tag for a 60GB system is huge, but no one ever said blu-ray was gonna be cheap either. In my opinion, I don't really need blu-ray technology in my house. Regular average-Joe DVD players work fine. Why would I want to watch "Benchwarmers" in HD? Personally, I don't think it really matters. The PS3 launch was indeed violent. And the fact that Sony only released 400,000 units in NA and only released a little over 100,000 units in Japan didn't really help keeping everyone in a stable environment. The PS3's online system is free, but it's launch lilne-up is very unimpressive. In my opinion, Sony has really screwed up big time and the PS3 is not holding up too good in the console wars. Other than it's realistic graphics and hi-tech specs, I don't really care for that stuff. It's all about games and how you present them. The PS3 launch games are pitful. Resistance Fall of Man is okay, but its FPS controls are a little gaudy and boring. When you get a PS3 this year, you're not really gonna have much to choose from. Though there have been some droughts, The demand for the PS3 is extremely high! Which is why thousands of Sony's new console have been sold on ebay every 5 minutes! In conclusion, Sony's PS3 currently stands in last place of the console wars. However, I do hope Sony will come to their senses and increase the PS3's momentum next year to get back in it and become just as strong as they were with the PS2, maybe even stronger! But if it won't happen by the end of 2007, there's gonna be 100 times more obstacles that Sony has to overcome in the future. But for now, lets see what happens. I have a good feeling about Sony's future. Who knows, they may have some surprises to use as their "ace-in-the-hole".
Wii!!! Nintendo has released its new console, the Nintendo Wii. When the first demo unit was first announed and shown by Mr. Iwata at E3 2005, people were astonished and possibly a bit disgusted. I guess that's how the old saying goes: "Don't judge a book by it's cover". A year later at E3 2006, Nintendo did a lot to appeal the huge crowds with the Wii by showcasing over 30 game demos for the console and stating at the E3 press conference that the Wii is innovative, intuitive, and a lot of fun. Right now, I see the Nintendo Wii somewhere in the middle in the current standings of the console wars. The Wii isn't attracting as much of the hardcore crowd as the 360, but it's cheap price and better launch games beat the PS3's shortage of quality and quantity of their launch lineup and their ridiculous price. Games like Zelda TP, Monkey Ball BB, Wii sports, and some others help Wii become so fun with the friendly crowd and the I-don't-play-videogames crowd with it's motion sensing controllers. I see the successes and failures of the Wii equally in the near future. One failure I think will happen is that Nintendo didn't really announce much 3rd party support for the Wii for next year. I'm a little worried. Also, the Wii's new way to play videogames could possibly dull other gamers and make them go back with regular button-mashing. However, the successes pretty much tells itself with the 2007 Wii titles coming out. Some examples of highly anticipated titles inculde Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, and more. Nintendo is also making way for new ground-up titles like P.R.O.J.E.C.T. Hammer, and Disaster Day of Crisis would also probably help the Wii become a success. Overall, Wii is off to a decent start in the console wars and I think Nintendo will have their "full" momentum going starting next year.:)
In conclusion, here's what I think of the current console wars standings: 1st: 360. 2nd: Wii. 3rd: PS3. Here's also what I think the standings would be by the end of 2007: 1st: Wii. 2nd: 360. 3rd: PS3. For those who are not satisfied. Don't get to so frustrated. Write your own blog and let people hear your thoughts on the console wars or your thoughts on the different systems, anything. Besides, it's just my opinion. I think the Wii will have the greatest chance of success by the end of next year.
