The responses to this article are, for the most part, totally moronic. Games, as an artistic medium, clearly have a problem with sexism and patriarchy. The Last of US, by gaming standards, is much more nuanced and complex in its gender characterisations. Carolyn acknowledges this but then builds on this, stating that it's a sad state of affairs when we so celebrate that there is actually nuanced and not outright caricature... All the bigots on this page need to settle down!
@dlCHIEF58 @Rippletonz Hey Chief, you really sound like a moron. Where as Rippletonz gives a reasoned thoughtful argument that incorporates analysis of the social system that ALWAYS stands behind the production of things (including games), you sprout adhominems trying to attack his personality.
@magicalclick @Senor_Kami Cause we wouldn't want to think too deeply about social problems now would we? Better to bury our heads in the sand and pretend everything's okay!
Games don't need to be 'realistic'. But what all good games - and indeed, all good art - should do is illuminate the issues that plague people in the real world. Games should raise questions about the degredation, alienation and exploitation that make up everyday life in contemporary capitalism. Examples? GTA IV, FF7, Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid 4 etc etc
"Jaw-dropping visuals require a jaw-dropping budget, and big investments kill creativity. When you have to produce a hit, the industry becomes swamped with homogeneous efforts that blend together."
Perfectly sums up the issue. The experience of gaming, the story-telling behind the greatest games, get lost in the pursuit of money. Rather, games have to appeal to the lowest common denominator and have to look as good as possible to satiate a mass audience. In and of itself, I have no issue with bringing gaming - or any other art form - to a mass audience. But when money-making itself becomes the object, and producers try and make art appeal to as many people as is possible (thus, lowering it to a point where all will want it), art typically loses its essence.
@Superdude475. If there are no redeeming or outstanding qualities to mention, it is not up to those asserting that to prove a negative. No one has given any reason why he is a decent sidekick.
