Wwwwhhy Linux whhhhy.....

After having my machine running fine for over a week I decided I need some Linux installed, which I choose Fedora Core 4. Well I had a partition put aside for this but it was soon all to go Pete Tong.

Having never installed Fedora before I had the installation notes up on the lappy, it promptly went through the installation screens until it asked for the partitioning info. Me thinking well atleast I can see what drives/partitions it sees and I can go from there. So I selected manual setup using Druid disk, it then listed my 3 hard disks with no RAID setup or partitioning. I promptly rebooted and was faced with a can not load o/s error. I tried to repair the MBR but later found there was no partitions on the disks and I had also had said good bye to all my backed up data.

To cut a long story short I had to recover the data from the disks, to which half was unrecoverable and then had to piece the missing bits back together using various CDs and DVDs I had saved it too. Needless to say it took bloody ages and I wont be doing that again in a hurry.

After learning the hard way i'm planning on getting a cheap SoA shuttle and installing it on there, that way my destruction is limited to just the o/s.

The Forgotten Entry

well I finally got my machine together, overclocked and running.

standard
CPU - 11x200 = 2200mhz
Memory - 3-8-4-4
gfx - 450/1050

3dmark06 3997

overclocked
CPU - 11x236 = 2596mhz
Memory - 2.5-6-3-3
gfx - 500/1200

3dmark06 - 4500

At this point I was proper chuffed <insert smug look>

Mar get ma goon...

Certain people need shooting because I still havent got my second hard disk yet and wont till Thursday making it nearly 2 weeks since I ordered my upgrade. Although I did get the Artic cooling gfx cooler and wireless antennas I ordered. The antennas should increase my wireless performance by 10-80%, just in time for when I make my return to gaming on Friday...

WTF is taking so long ?

Spent all week waiting for a hard disk to turn up, so on Thursday I went to sales to chase up the drive. Found out they had only ordered one and I was waiting for something that wasn't even going to turn up :(

I could have ordered one for the next day but that would have cost £10-15 and thats just crazy so I decided to have it ordered when the company orders in its stock on Monday. So now I have to wait till Tuesday before I can even start installing my new system. What makes it worse is i've been working my ass off all week because of the stupidly high volume of faulty server nodes we've had to fix and now I cant even get my new system up and running.

Then tomorrow the remains of this system is being sold to a mate so i'm gonna be compter-less for several days.

False hope

Went into work today after 2 days off (went to see Oasis in Sheffield) to find no one had done any of my work and I had 12 server nodes to fix with 4 more turning up later on. I thought all this wouldnt matter as I would be collecting my rig upgrades and it would all be good. Instead I ended up doing an hour over time and coming home late. It turns out one of my two hard disk still hasn't come into stock.....maybe tomorrow

operation: upgrade

After nearly 3 years with this current system it's time to say goodbye. This system was built summer of 2003 before my final year of uni. Now that i'm back home with a stable job and i've paid off my new car it's time for an upgrade. The system spec is as follows:-

CPU - AMD 64 4200 dual core 2.2ghz
Motherboard - Asus A8N-SLI Premium
Memory - 2x 1gb OCZ PC4000 Platinum Series EB-DDR CAS 3
Gfx - XFX 7800GT 256mb Extreme Edition
Case - Lian Li V100B Plus
Hdd - 2x WD 250gb 16mb cache in RAID 0
Cooling - ThermalRight XP-90c with 92mm Vantec Tornado 7v modded

This will be added to the current 550w Enermax PSU, Pioneer 8x DVDrw, floppy, 200gb WD 8mb cache and audigy sound card.

Now it's all on order, it's time to play the waiting game...
