So, it's two days until the Vindictus (already out and also known as Mabinogi Heroes) Closed Beta test. It only lasts until Aug. 28th, but the Open Beta starts about four days after. My memory is sketchy, but it wasn't longer than that. I've been accepted, yeah. I'm pretty sure the selection may have been somewhat random, or that they mainly looked for computer specs. Whatever it is, I'm in and I have to wait two more days to test this baby out. Oh, yes. I suppose I should mention it's not a subscription game. It's free to play, though it will probably have a cash shop. We can only hope Nexon isn't silly with what they put in there. It really looks like something that will set itself apart from the normal games. For one thing, it's finally an action RPG as far as they go. Mabinogi was ...somewhat. I mean, it was select the skill then click the ground or whatever, but it was still...action. That game honestly did come off as boring, come to think of it. The community was supposed to be the main lure of that game, but I never really got into that either. Honestly, it just wasn't my type of game. Vindictus ... I can't even begin to describe it. For one thing, the graphics look really well done. From the subtle animation of hair to the excessive detail on every weapon (did I mention they have enormous scythes? They do!) and clothing, the relatively large amount of customization you can do, the active dungeons with great cutscenes and a story to match, everything! To delve more into customization, your characters are basically premade. Yes, there's a gender lock, but you can customize your character's face, skin color, and hair style / color. No matter which you choose, your character will still come out looking like it knows its sexy (same weight, general look), so it's no Aion when it comes to that. Still, it's good they did give you some options because it'd be a pain in the arse to see yourself everywhere. (I don't doubt there will be hundreds of girls with the same look, though.) Aside from that, there's weapon and armor customization. You can craft your weapons (whether you're wanting a scythe, sword, magic rod, whatever) and armor before dyeing it whatever colour you fancy. At least, that's what it seemed like in weapon customization videos. As far as gameplay goes, it doesn't look to be a seamless world. There was a dungeon screen shown, so I'm assuming there's a main town and then upon entry of the dungeon you're given the chance to assemble your party and head on in. I haven't played it myself, so I can't be sure. In the dungeons, there appear to be cutscenes giving you a bit of story before actual gameplay - where players have been seen creating campfires and sitting around to regenerate, picking up random objects in their environment such as barrels and hurling them at enemies, and setting off traps such as a large chain to trap boss monsters and have at them. There's a stamina system which controls just about how much of this you can do, and item use is rather active in the sense that if you're trying to drink a potion while a monster is slapping you around - you're probably going to spill a good bit of it. As is to be expected, you can't exactly carry around an enormous boulder or some such for very long. If you don't get it off of you, it's likely to crush you and destroy a good amount of your hp. When it comes to NPCs, there are some cameos from the original Mabinogi such as Ferghus the (probably will break everything you own and laugh about it later) blacksmith, our goddess Nao (yes, me. Hahaha.), and that little neko cat thing whose purpose other than looking strange are unclear. I've seen a lot of standard crafting screens, though I've also read that you'll have the ability to tell your NPC friends to have at something then run off and do something else entirely while they slave away for you. Sounds good, because I've never been a fan of standing around watching a craft bar fill. I'll probably go back and edit this later, but something has come up so I must cut my rant short.
