The Houston Rockets, my favorite team in the NBA missed the playoffs this year. It was clearly a disappointing season, in which the Rockets were projected to be the 2nd best team in the West. But the Rockets were plagued with injuries, most notably T-Mac and Yao missing a good amount of games, and didn't play together much.
In the offseason the Rockets picked up Derek Anderson, Rafer Alston, Stromile Swift and drafted Luther Head. Derek Anderson was traded to the Heat because we pretty much had too many guards, and while he was injured, rookie Luther Head stepped up to be a big role of the Rockets season. He lead the NBA rookies in 3pt made and he passed my expectations. Stromile Swift was pretty much a dissapointment. He was supposed to be a big role of the Rockets, but didn't contribute a whole lot and was very inconsistent. He also didn't seem to have the work ethic. I'm pretty pleased to the pick up of Rafer Alston, who pretty much plays like a true point guard. The Rockets traded Mike James for Alston, even though James is having a great season in Toronto, he's more of a scoring guard, and I doubt, he would be having the success there here in Houston. So I'm pleased with the trade with Alston.
The one good thing that came out of this season was Yao. Yao Ming played some pretty dominant basketball after he returned from surger on the toe. After the playoffs Yao was averaging like 28 points and 11 rebounds. It would take double or even triple teams to get Yao out of the game, and it showed that Yao was playing to his potential. Unfortunately the Rockets perimeter shooting wasn't that great, so the offense wasn't able to take advantage of the double/triple teams effectively.
Hopefully the next year the Rockets can get deep into the playoffs and even maybe make the finals. But of course the Rockets would have to stay healthy, and probably pick up another free agent in the offseason. Also in my opinion I think it will take a new coach, because I don't think Jeff Van Gundy is a good coach, he's just like too defensive minded. Also I wouldn't mind seeing the Rocket picking up Peja Stojakovic or Bonzi Wells, who are supposed to be free agents after the season ends.
