@RSM-HQ: as a European in my 20s i can confirm there are plenty outside of the 30+ american demographic who are excited about this. My friends and I played this game to death as kids and none of us had so much as touched a skateboard up until that point. Even today it's one of the few game series you can talk about with a non-gamer and they'll know what you're talking about and will likely have fond memories. I guess was I'm saying is that interest in skateboarding, or even gaming, wasn't the entry point for many players into this series originally, and doesn't have to be the case for the remakes either
I think you're right though in that this remake isn't likely to bring in a massive new audience to the series and probably won't be the same smash hit that the Crash Trilogy has been. Most of the interest will come from fans of the originals (like myself), but I wouldn't underestimate how strong and widespread this interest is. Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD was critically considered to be a substandard game in the series but still managed 120,000 sales in its first week. The interest is still there and if this game actually turns out good then it's likely will at least match that performance
Moreover, they are very good games, especially games from Tony Hawk's 3 onwards which are still incredibly playable to this day, despite not having aged that well graphically. The originals (that are in this remake) are somewhat primitive by comparison but it looks like they are basing the foundations of the gameplay on the engine used for the later games which is a good sign. If they do manage to nail the feel of the originals then I'm confident it'll be a success and hopefully inspire a THPS 3+4 remake later down the line
I, for one, am extremely excited about this and probably the most hyped I've been about a game in about a decade
