KoTOR 3 and licensing
by neroist on Comments
With EA winning the licensing for the development and publishing of Star Wars digital media in video gaming, and EA now owning Bioware. One would expect that (we could in fact) hope for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3. This is under the assumption that Knights of the Old Republic is being considered as it is an acclaimed IP. Alas, most statements released only speak of EA's intentions on a new Star Wars: Battlefront My quandary is the relationship over d20 system used in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Would Wizards of the Coast license the d20 system to EA in the form of the d20 Open Game License for Knights of the Old Republic 3? While Wizards of the Coast did not renew it's license for Star Wars d20 in 2010. The conflict comes as Hasbro (owners of WotC) have just inked out a digital rights with Ubisoft over Hasbro's board games IP. Ubisoft losing the rights to D&D in 2011 still may have some claim in the digital d20 system's games. Would Ubi allow EA a uncontested implementation of d20 that we love in Knights of the Old Republic. Is EA not talking about Knights of the Old Republic 3 as there are too many legal obligations? Would a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic be as good without feat progression, weapon dice, to hit dice and attribute modifiers? I believe when you take the d20 system out of Knights of the Old Republic you are left with something akin to SW:TOR. " and like that, the magic was gone.."
