I'm warning you guys now, I have a Stephen King style way of writing sorta. If you don't like Stephen King, you probably won't like me. The character, Adam is not based on me even though some of his views are mine. Also, Green Mountain, New York does not exist as far as I know.
The Lost Civilizations of Night and Day
Chapter 1- The Choice is Proposed
Adam
Adam stopped walking.
Adam
Beyond the thudding of the Doors in his ears, he knew he had heard his name.
I need to talk to you Adam
Adam turned the iPod off and looked around. Not a thing lurked in the Northeastern forest. The only movement was the leaves falling in the Mid-Autumn Afternoon. "Where are you?" he muttered.
You won't see me there
The voice was deep, not very different than Jim Morrison's he had heard just moments ago. It sounded as though it had lasted through the ages and was tired of a burden, or a task. "Alright," he looked in the trees ", whoever the hell you are, I'm gonna find you and teach you to joke," he said threateningly.
A chuckle. And I wish it was one.
"Where are you?!!" Adam yelled in anger.
Hovering 20000 feet above your planet
Adam made an impatient noise. Maybe he was just going crazy. Thanks a lot voice, he thought, you ruined my day even further.
I won't leave until you talk with me rationally.
Adam went on walking, walking to the place that had ruined his, and millions of other children's childhoods, and was still ruining them. School.
Every day, the same thing, the same routine. Wake up. Eat breakfast. Walk to school. Come back. No deviation, at least for him. Not a lot of people actually enjoyed the place, but Adam absolutely hated it. This day was turning out particularly bad. First, his oldest cat had died yesterday, Sunday. 17. A good age for a cat, but the cat himself had been there all his life, he was older than Adam was by 3 years. Then there was the deer. Adam had started his walk to school face down, angry at the world. He walked down the familiar path, and then tripped, on a dead deer. That itself wouldn't have bothered him. Nature had to sort itself out and keep populations of animals low. Survival of the fittest. But this wasn't from nature. This deer had been shot and cut to shreds, head thrown in a heap of bones, two pieces of the rib cage sticking out its eyes "Just to show em' who's boss" as his "friend" Anthony would say. Now that had just made him mad. Defiling a dead thing's remains? Taking the best parts and playing with the rest like Legos? That's not how any good hunter should do things.
He had tried to forget those things, but now this voice comes and scares the crap out of him.
You know, the world just plain sucks, he thought. Maybe I'm just being a whinysh*t but you know, the world deserves it.
Adam wouldn't have been a whinysh*t if he was normal. He had the looks of a happy kid, but he didn't have the personality. He had long, brown hair, amazing blue eyes that would only have looked better if he didn't have a frown on all the time. He was tall, but not freakishly, and wasn't a toothpick like that kid John in his class. He didn't participate in any sports of any kind, and ate like a pig, but always had somehow remained fairly thin and muscular. He had always been the strongest kid, and lots of people told him to go join football or wrestling. He had told all of them to go soak their heads and that wrestling was gay but he had said it in a friendly way.
The only time you saw a smile on that kids face was when he was faking it, if he was walking through the woods or the jungle, or on top of a mountain, if he saw a wild animal, healthy and proud looking, and if he was spending time with his pets and family. They were the only people who he liked in the world, except maybe Stephanie, a girl who hung out with him and his "friends". You might see a smile on his face if he was having an intelligent conversation with someone who could respond in a rational way. Those were the only times he would enjoy speaking anyway.
He walked into the school. Ol' Green Mountain Middle School had all the brilliance any Upstate New York school would. Middle School was grades 8 and 9, such an ingenious plan. While down that there street, Green Mountain Intermediate had the 6th and 7th graders. All the buildings were red brick, two stories, and square. That's really all there was to the schools.
Adam marched in the door to his locker's hallway. Then some blonde walked up to him.
"Hi," she said. Then she made a smile that revealed brilliant white teeth that her parents had probably paid good money for. He waved and walked on, leaving the girl confused and let down. What was she expecting? Was he supposed to ask her out on a date or something? Did she think they'd have a long and happy relationship? Well that wasn't gonna happen.
I think she was fairly good looking.
"Gah! Would you go away!" he thought furiously.
I've set my terms. I want to talk.
About what? Blonde girls who walk up to mopes and said "Hi"?
No. You. Me. Talk. After this, schul or whatsit.
Fine voice. You win. I'll talk.
He went to Homeroom, History Class, his favorite class, other than the bumbling 60 year old teacher who had almost no idea what he was talking about. He read the book. Adam aced every class. It was really all below him. School itself had never bothered him. He was a prodigy and all the teachers knew it. Half the time, they asked him questions about things.
What bothered him about school were the other kids. All the immature little snobs. He absolutely hated them. He knew they would mature as they got older, but it had been this way since 5th grade. Everything had to be cursing, and sex. He cursed, but not at others. That's the way his parents had taught him. Go ahead and curse, but not at others. And the sex, he had absolutely no interest in that. In fact, people called him gay because he didn't say anything about it and he didn't take up any of the girls who liked him. He would have gone out with them, but he knew he would just hurt them in the end. Not in any physical way, but his silence would make them mad. He couldn't help it. He didn't care about gossip or sports or looks. They would talk to him and he would listen, but he wouldn't have any input. He just didn't care. The only time he did talk to a girl was when he and Stephanie would discuss history and ethics at lunch. His other "friends" would call themf@gs but he liked the discussions. The only reason he sat at the table other than Stephanie was because all his life he had hated looking like an outcast even though he was one. He had enjoyed company once. Before the big change in the 5th grade. They had been so pure then. They made jokes that didn't involve something perverted or mean. Those were the jokes he could make and liked. But as the others changed, he stayed the same and eventually, couldn't relate to any of them. Then he had gone into his shell. He stopped liking his friends. He started reading books during lunch. It was hard to go to school.
He had gone into his shell, and it would take something big to bring him out. Little did he know that something had come.
He drifted through the day. At lunch, he had a conversation about communism with Stephanie, while the others gawked at them and wondered what they were talking about and why they were talking about it.
Finally, he started his long walk home.
Hey, hope you haven't forgotten me.
"Alright, who are you and what do you want from me," he muttered aloud.
The first question would take centuries to answer, but I'll start with my name. My name is Valornen. I have roamed this universe since the beginning. I am what might be called a ringleader of people like you and myself.
"Alright, Valornen," he smiled ", I want to see some proof."
Oh do you?
Yes. I do.
An object came flying from the sky at a blinding speed. It made contact with the tree in front of him, which was split down the center. A large maple. Sliced in half. Adam's smile vanished. The two halves of the tree fell to the ground in a large thump. In a small stump, the only remnant of the tree still rooted to the spot, was a blindingly white sword.
"Alright," he said aloud ", you have my attention."
I shall post the rest of Chapter 1 at a later time. Well, I hope you liked it, because I enjoyed writing it. It'll get more juicy and fantastical later. Don't worry.
