OK, everybody's got to make a buck to stay in business; I understand that. But when the background ads have more contrast and color than the actual web page content, it gets hard to view the page without discomfort, for me at least. And yes, a vivid, distracting ad for shaving cream is even more annoying than one that is at least somehow related to gaming. End of rant. Of course if Gamespot were to optimize it's pages for view on monitors with greater than 800 x 600 resolution, that would be really cool.
