No, hardcore gaming has never been mainstream. If you meant that hardcore games have been the standard fare in gaming, then that is true so far. But that is not what you wrote.

Mainstream implies that it is the general consensus of the majority. The majority of the general public is that gaming is a niche hobby populated by pre-teens and social outcasts. That is not true, and the mainstream view is changing slowly to one that is more accurate, but hardcore games and gaming in general are not mainstream.

Hardcore games are the norm in the gaming world, but not in the mainstream.

just go to a dictionary web site, study more about the term, "mainstream."

huge franchises such as gta, gran turismo, halo, and others have been often

called hardcore games. these types of video games have been the mainstream

in the gaming world for a long time and they still are.

read a few topics about nintendo... i actually think they are quite clever trying to attract non-gamers, (we just did a mini case study actually in economics about nintendo wii), and here is the reason why.

gamers tend to be loyal, if they have a ps2, they will stick to it, and buy the ps3, if they have an xbox, they will buy a xbox360, and if they have a gamecube, they will buy a wii. this is the primary way that they are gonna get customers.

however, the gamecube was not successful, so they know they are not gonna get a lot of primary customers, therefore, they need another resource.

they made their games motion interactive, i.e. wii sports, wii play, wario... these games managed to attract a lot of customers who don't normally play, because it is a different style to sitting there pressing buttons, lots of girls are starting to buy nintendo wii, and that is how they are currently the best selling console.

this is also what they have done with the DS.

but there is one thing that makes them stupid, its the relase date of their games!!!!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

there is no evidence that all that non-gamers are buying wiis.they could be the same people that used to buy

nintendo products. there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it's just that things you are talking about

is what nintendo is trying to push forward, but we don't really know who is buying wiis.
