social playlists are the onlys one that are affected by boosting or w/e its called. I may be wrong , but there might be different rankings for social and ranked playlists. And yes it does take a while to rank up unless you go on a winning streak.
Bioshock is fantastic game. Gears is also very good. Either of those would be my choice. Halo I wouldnt get if you cant play multiplayer with a reliable connection. Just wouldnt be as much fun. thats my .02
