People naming consoles like the PS3, Dreamcast, Xbox and Saturn :D

Virtual Boy has to be a good shout. Unusable for some people and abandoned pretty quickly.

CDi had no redeeming features that I can think of.

Nokia N-Gage if we're including handhelds.

3DO, Jaguar, Amiga 32CD all had some good games which were eventually ported to more popular systems once they died. Shit consoles, but not the worst.

Panzer Dragoon Saga. For the most part, conversations feel very natural. The dialogue is also quite bleak and realistic rather than OTT and cringe worthy. Not sure many JRPGs achieve this even now. Amazing for a 1998 game.

The original MGS is OTT but still brilliant.

Grim Fandango as mentioned.

The Last of Us is as good as a HBO show imo.

Really want to like this, but the camera does look fucking shite. Surely they could add a manual-only camera option.

I'm playing through Conker's BAD for the first time and I think I've given up now because of the camera.

Played BK a few years ago and it's still in my top 1 games of all time.

Tooie, DK64 and DMC are not for me.

Yooka laylee kart racing next please.

Might want to redo your poll. NES and SNES were two completely different generations (1987 and 1991 I think).

I got properly into games at around age 7 in 1996. So four years either side of that... See what I mean.

Also I had a Mega Drive, not a SNES ;)

Mine did when I moved back home for a few months at 26 :D

I think some people of that generation grew up being told that watching too much TV was bad for them.

Mums never stop telling you what to do. They mean well. Look at moving out after you finish school. It will hurt financially in the short term, but you need your independence.

Chefs Luv Shack. Criminally shit.

Clayfighter 63 1/3 is close.

I don't mind Superman 64. Flying through hoops is quite satisfying.

Releasing a load of Shmups and 2D JRPGs in the West would not have made the Saturn popular. The most exciting games at the time were 3D, as it had never been done before.

Also, games like WipEout, Tomb Raider, Resi, MGS and Gran Turismo were marketed by Sony to adults to make gaming more socially acceptable to them. The Saturn's marketing was 'rad', but as an extension of the Genesis being for older, cooler kids.

My perspective is blurred as I'm from the UK, where Sonys marketing was ridiculously good. I've seen the American URNotE commercials on YouTube and they don't follow this logic. Apparently Americans weren't all popping pills and playing WipEout in abandoned warehouse raves in the 90s.

Agree that PS1 was the best at the time. It just had so many blockbuster games from '97 onwards. The games were also cheaper and you could get the magazines with demo discs every month.

Having said that, I owned an N64 first and it's big name titles were just as good. Unfortunately it relied totally on Nintendo and Rare to release games, which were always fucking delayed.

A top 10 for each system would be too close to call. A top 25 would be PS1 hands down.

Ironically the Saturn holds up best today. The 2-D games are an obvious reason. Another is that a lot of top titles have arcade style gameplay, so they focus on pick up and play.
