It's most likely the CPU fan kickin' up when your CPU is crunching some mad numbers (like folding@home). Variable speed fans will speed up when the CPU starts to heat up and then it will slow back when everything is just idling. In other words it's normal.Peabody99224
you might be right actually... having listened more carefully there is a pattern to the noise, so it is unlikely to be a random electrical buzz.. more likely to me the sound of a small fan spinning...

its basically all the time, regardless of whether there is a bluray in or not. the reason i think it is the cpu is because when i do folding at home it makes a different higher pitched noise that does not sound like buzzing. both are very hard to hear and you have to put your head next or near to the system. I'm not overly worried as I have a two year insurance policy on the system and in the first year the shop will replace for a brand new system, but i dont want to take something back that is not broken. That said, i dont want to fill up my HD with games and saves, and then have the system brick... if anyone else has any knowledge of this, would be interested to know. Seems like the guy above has a similar noise, so maybe its fine. like I said, everything works...

oh, and I forgot to mention... the buzzing stops a few seconds before the system turns off... which again leads to me believe it is the cpu... lol, its one of those things, now I know the sound is there, I find myself trying to listen for it..

hey all... I just got a ps3 a few days ago and everything is great. However, i noticed when playing with some cables on my TV that my ps3 makes a slight buzzing noise. Now, the noise is coming from the PS3, not the TV and it seems to come from the right hand side of the unit (when horrozontal). I should say right now that the buzz is very very quiet and you can only hear it if your head is right next to the system (talking about 6 inches or so). At any kind of normal distance you would never hear it, even if in a totally silent room. Basically, I think it is the CPU making the noise as it makes a slightly different noise when I do folding at home. again, the noise can only be heard when your head is litterally next to the system. It reminds me a little of CPU whine, which is a fairly common complaint amoungst laptop and PC owners. So, does anyone elses make this noise? Like I said, you would have to put your ear right next to the air intake on the right side of the system (near where the power light is). Am I being overly paranoid? Like I said, I only noticed this by chance as my ear was a couple of inches away from the system when playing with some cords on my TV. Would feel a little silly trying to take it back because of this.. especially if others make this noise to... the buzz sounds electrical...

Devs are getting how the PS3 works now. the first year is always rough for a system, the 360 got HD ps2 ports its first year

DMC4, Burnout P, GTA4. the 3 biggest multiplat releases SO FAR this year run better on ps3.

Im sure we will see the bad ps3 port now and again (EA sports) but it is looking bright for ps3 games

icarus212001

Actually, DMC4 is well known to look better on the 360 - see eurogamer comparison - and GTA4 runs at a lower res on the ps3 and suffers from, according to IGN, more framerate issues than the 360 version - all this despite a 5 gig install!!!

And the ps3 is pulling ahead how???

by seeing that you are a troll! *casts Ultima*

Umm.. I can back up everything I said with links to well known websites. For comparisons just search for eurogamer DMC4 comparison - the 360 version wins.

Just read the IGN review to see that GTA on ps3 suffers from more framerate issues.

Unlike some people here, I based my posts on reality... not dreams.

I love the way that it has somehow become common knowledge that the ps3 version looks better when the only evidence we have seen has been posted by fanboys in forums... no one can give links, true image comparisons or anything!! It's all just hearsay based on the dreams of PS3 owners.

The only reliable comment came from IGN and, aside from minor popup, they actually said that the PS3 version suffers from a worse framerate - DESPITE A 5 gig install... i mean.. seriously guys... how can you claim this a victory?

Plus, if you look at most review videos, they use the 360 version.
