OnLive - The Future is Now

I remember years ago reading about Onlive. I thought it was a joke. I could never see myself ever wanting to use such a service, but after doing a little reading and even playing some games using OnLive on my PC I can truely say this is a great thing. My current computer is a Toshiba Satallite running windows vista with 4gb ram. I have a hard time running Guild Wars at good settings. With OnLive i was running Darksiders beautifully and had no lag at all. It was magical. Even fast paced shooters such as Unreal Tournament 3 ran flawlessly with gorgeous graphics (50/10 kd ^^). I never thought my computer would even be able to handle such games and now with OnLive it is a gaming BEAST! I now have a portable monster machine. It is amazing. I had to go and pre-order the home 'console' version of OnLive after playing with it on my computer. I've seen some videos on YouTube talking about lag, but honestly I found very little lag. When I tried to play Trine however the cursor seemed to lag, but the key input was fine... so I think it may just be the game, I'm not really sure.

There are a couple things I am worried about for the future of OnLive such as third party support (they need more games) and the possibility for lag if too many gamers end up using at once (i.e it probably couldn't handle CoD BO at this point). Though these worries persist I believe they will never get in the way of the enjoyment that OnLive brings to the table. There are too many pros to really get too worked up over the cons just yet. OnLive is definatly something to keep an eye one... and the home console version is coming out just in time for Christmas! I really hope people give it a chance because I believe it will revolutionize gaming.

Wii ain't for the wee lads anymore.

For the longest time since the Wii's debut it has been considered by many as a gimmick. A toy aimed at little children and old people hoping for a magic way to get in shape. Though there were a small niche of gamers that stood by their Wii early on, it has been hard to say the Wii is the console of choice for hardcore gamers. With the release of games such as Fragile Dreams and Monster Hunter 3: Tri, the Wii is really shaping up to be a console for a more mature audience.
Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon is a very deep and emotional game, unlike any that I have seen on the Wii before. It is clearly a game aimed at a slightly older audience than the usual Wii software. In all honesty it was the first game I ever purchased for the Wii (which i bought solely for the future release of Mistwalker's The Last Story). Next came Capcom's famous (or infamous) Monster Hunter series. Commonly known for its intense difficulties and sub-par review scores, Monster Hunter 3: Tri dazzles on the Wii. Not only does it improve upon many of the lesser points of past Monster Hunter games, such as single player mode and difficulty progression, it introduces a very solid multiplayer function, which is something the Wii has been significantly lacking in.
With solid games on the way such as Metroid: Other M, Arc Rise Fantasia, and Mistwalker's The Last Story, it would seem that the Wii is only getting started in a console war that has been going on for years. This gamer is highly impressed with the direction of Nintendo's 'gimmick' console and I have high hopes that the Wii will become home to many a hardcore gamer.

Is it time for the Last Story yet?

Last month saw the release of Final Fantasy 13, and while that is nice and dandy for the majority of sheep who are following the herd, I for one am astounded that I have not seen coverage of what I would call one of the most important games of the coming year, The Last Story. For those who don't know, The Last Story is the child of legendary Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi (HS). Mistwalker, HS's new development company, has released two games prior to The Last Story, one being Blue Dragon and the other Lost Odyssey (both on xbox 360). However, The Last Story is different as it is aimed for release on the Nintendo Wii. With such a small selection of RPGs and traditional games, I am greatly surprised that this has not been higher in Wii news. With new columns being released straight from Mistwalker each week depicting game mechanics, setting, and back story I believe there should be an official thread or page made solely for all updates. To keep myself up to date on development of The Last Story I have been checking in on various foreign video game websites who are doing continual coverage on HS's latest work. This is quite troublesome for it requires translating of various languages which may or may not equate to correct understanding. While i appreciate coverage of well known games such as Gears of War 3, Monster Hunter Tri, Metroid: Other M, I would be extremely grateful if I could view the weekly updates and art for The Last Story in a dedicated area. Why is it that every time I log on I see a new update on the Infinity Ward/Activision/MW2 scandal, but I can't seem to find a bit of information on one of the RPG world's most influential designer's latest work? Is it because MW2 is the highest selling game ever while the majority of people that play video games don't even know who HS is or what Lost Odyssey means? Probably, but this should not prevent hungry Wii owners and excited RPG fans from learning about what is in store for a neglected console and a generic genre.
