After procrastinating it for a while, I decided to start playing Fallout 3 again. Since I'm not off of school for Christmas break, I had a lot of time to kill, so I just popped in the disk and started running.
I have to admit, Fallout 3 had scared me away for a while. I'm not much of a fan of constant adrenaline, which is something you usually have in your blood when you're playing Fallout 3. There are monsters, grotesque brainchildren of the sick minds of the developers down at Bethesda (which have INCREDIBLE models, although the walking animations still need a little work), around every corner. It's dark, it's scary, and it's really gorey. I don't mind the gore, which is why I decided to pick up a little thing called the Bloody Mess perk, making enemies explode in to large splatters of blood and guts and giving me an additional 5% damage with all weapons.
Given the above, I had to force myself to push the power button and finish off the game. I had started at around nine, but given the continuous adrenaline, every hour felt like meer seconds of haunted mansion horror.
One thing I really loved about the game was the plot. Your dad has escaped from Vault 101, a safe house-turned-social experiment where nobody can come or go. The security guards are after you and you need to fight through them, giving you your first real (and fairly weak, given the fact that your primary weapon is a BB gun) taste of FO3 combat.
A little while after, you manage to escape from the vault. I won't say anything about the plot after this point, because I think it's too good for words, and the only way to truely understand it is to go out and buy the game for yourself.
Do I recommend renting Fallout 3? Definitely. You can have the game done in about 10 hours if you stick to the main quest. There is a lot of DLC coming for it, but if you just want to play the main part of the game, you can rent it for a week and beat it playing it a bit every day. There is no multiplayer in Fallout 3 (no co-op, online, or system link), so if you only play multiplayer games, don't even bother with this.
If you're interested in the game, feel free to check out the review I wrote about it for the 360 right here on GameSpot.
