CCP rolled out its free to play expansion this past month which was really nice for a great many gamers. However in the process of doing so they created out of thin air, in game items that paying customers had been buying and selling on the market for three years.
Three years earlier CCP gave as part of a Collectors Edition, 5 Gnosis. They also gave as a gift, special edition Gnosis and Apotheosis ship to all of their paying customers. These ships then became a part of the EVE Market.
Foolishly, i thought CCP would keep these as "special edition" or perhaps "collectibles" so i and many others delved into the market for them.
With the hundreds of thousands of Gnosis and Apotheosis now created out of thin air by CCP and thrown into the game's market, the prices have crashed and three years of patience and ISK has gone down the tube.
This is a lesson not just for me but for all gamers in an MMO where the games developers can create anything they want even if it impacts the player made game market. Game Dev's create and give away free things to players with good intentions however they forget the impact it can have on other players. Special Edition to Game Dev's simply means they will make new ones at any time, all the time.
Some lessons are more costly than others.
