Role Details
Based in GameSpot's San Francisco office, the Associate Editor will work as part of GameSpot's global editorial news team on both written and video content - bringing opinion and personality to help us in our mission of creating the best games coverage online. We need someone capable of primarily producing news-focused content around new and upcoming PC and console games. We're looking for someone who can not only write and present informative and entertaining coverage of games, but who can also find original angles from which to approach the industry.
We're looking for a talented writer with a strong work ethic, a team-first mentality, and a desire to share their opinions with the GameSpot audience. The role will also encompass on-camera work, so a willingness and aptitude to be an on-camera personality is required. A broad knowledge of video games is a must; if you typically devote all of your gaming time to a single series or genre, this might not be the job for you. You don't need to be knowledgeable about *every* gaming genre, but the successful applicant will have a thorough knowledge of and appreciation for contemporary video games as a whole.
The successful applicant will also be expected to be part of our peer-editing process, so an ability to accept and give constructive criticism is required.
Infrequent national and international travel to cover games events is also an expected part of the job.
Your Day-to-Day:
Write compelling editorial news copy that encompasses a wide variety of games-focused areas
Generate ideas for coverage based on the biggest game releases and news stories
Work with our in-house and global video teams to create, script, and feature in editorial videos
Contribute to our peer-review system for all GameSpot content on a daily basis
Write and contribute to all other types of GameSpot content, including reviews, features, analysis, opinion, and more
Attend industry events both locally and internationally
Key Projects:
Work with our Managing Editor, Reviews Editor, and Features Editor to identify coverage opportunities in accordance with the content calendar covering both pre- and post-release games
Cultivate relationships with key games partners and internal stakeholders
Qualifications:
You have --
Demonstrable video game-related writing and on-camera experience
Working knowledge of multiple gameplay genres and game series
1+ years experience at a global online publication
High standards of editorial excellence
Passion for video games and pop culture entertainment
Enthusiasm and the desire to work closely with a group of your peers
You might also have --
An active online presence across popular social media platforms and experience with game streaming
Knowledge of current internet publishing trends and SEO principles
