I have a ps3 which recently broke(got it replaced no problem. read my blog about it) it was sort of my fault unless you work for sony in which case I never touched it.
Everyone I know with a ps3 has had zero problems reliability wise. if you are waiting until christmas you mayaswell get the 160GB model. I would advise to get a second controller aswell because if you are like me then you love local co-op with your mates. Apart from the obvious big games like MGS4 (and i assume from your profile you already have a 360 so ill ignore titles on both platforms) you should consider the platinum titles only 20quid here in the UK (just for my own interest, are you with the Euro in Malta?)so they are well worth for building up your collection quickly while relatively cheaply. In the Platinum group I would advise resistance, motorstorm and Uncharted:drake's fortune all of which are great fun and well worth the reduced cost!
Plus check out the odd brilliant exclusive on the PSN like Pain, Pixeljunk Monsters and the mind-bending Echochrome. there are other great titles but I am just picking out my favourites.

EDIT: and as for ease of use while the 360s blades menu is excellent I think the PS3s Xross Media Bar (XMB) is so amazing its a wonder how I lived with out it!its so simple and yet so quick to use!
I just looked at your profile and relised you dont have a 360. it was just cos of the header. well dual platform games are all quite obvious like COD4 and GTA4 and the life destroying Oblivion! but there are plenty of great titles!
