There's been quite a bit of talk lately about bans to prevent Minors from purchasing games with violent content. I thought I'd throw my two cents in as well.
First off let me just say I'm all for laws to ban minors from purchasing M-Rated games with out parental consent, if just to get the crazy PTAs off the industries back. It's the same thing for R rated Movies and some content just isn't appropriate for kids. These Laws are never implemented correctly, though.
In Oklahoma, a new law was passed concerning violent and sexual video games. Some of the things in this law are ridiculous. One condition is that the offensive games must be covered like Porn, like some box art is going to corrupt children. Another one is that parents aren't even allowed to buy the games for their children, even if they approve of the game! This is just unconstitutional. The government can't tell us what forms of harmless entertainment we can participate in. Most of these laws are passed by people who have a problem with violent and\or sexual content in general or people who don't like video games, which leads me to my next point.
I hate how people just use these controversial games such as GTA as a springboard for their own political agendas, such as Comrade Hillary Clinton. She obviously hates pornography in general and she used the Hot Coffee controversy to try and get stricter porn laws passed. This is just stupid. No matter how much you dislike like some form of the media, you can't make it illegal as long as it's not a threat to national security. A lot of these laws are aimed at just hurting the industry as much as possible, and are not passed with the intention of protecting our youth.
I guess what I'm getting at here is that the video game industry should be held to the same standards as the rest of the entertainment industry. The truth is video games are no different than books, music and movies. So an M-Rated game should be able to have exactly what an R-Rated movie has. This includes Modest Sexual Content. If I, at 17, can see fairly graphic sex scenes in an R-Rated movie, why can't I in an M-Rated game? These mediums are essentially the same so we need to treat them as such.
