here's what I've seen on the forums lately. alot of confusion on what is HD and what is widescreen. so I'll break it down for you.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Aspect Ratio - Their are only two. wide and none wide. which would be 16:9(wide) and 4:3(standard). 4:3 is what you'll find on any average none HDTV. 16:9 is what you'll find in theatres and why black bars are across the TV when you watch a movie in wide screen to fit the picture.

Scan Modes
Interlace and Progressive exist because of the amount of info TV's and standard Cable can handle.
Interlace (i) is lower quality (in short). what it really means is the way the TV set will project the lines of the image. it will go in a random order depending on what reaches it first. it can go from middle to top to bottom to top to middle to bottom and so on.
Progressive (p) is higher Quality. it is also a higher framerate. (meaning smoother motion in the picture) Progressive projects one line at a time onto the TV. Top to bottom. always. this takes up more Bandwidth and older TV's and older early Cable connections could not handle it.
here are the Resolutions.
SD
480i
720i
