I have to agree with Brosnan. It felt like this film was trying too hard to be a "Bond" film, rather than trying to be a good film. The story was relatively simple, yet it somehow managed to be convoluted and overlong. Most of the "investigation" phase of the film felt like an excuse to go to multiple exotic locals with very little reason. It wouldn't have been so bad if the characters were interesting, but they're not. Bond is all but emotionless, even when the villain is supposed to have a personal history with him. The Bond girl starts out okay but then devolves into weak, damsel in distress love interest very quickly (plus I never bought her and Bond's relationship in the slightest). The villain is given almost no screen time and when he does show up I was bored, and Q, M, and Monney Penny served no real purpose to the plot. Even the action was lacking (seriously, the chase scene in Rome featured exactly "zero" danger). The Daniel Craig era has been strange. One film will break the mold and give us a great story and well developed characters (Casino Royal, Skyfall), then the next gives us a convoluted mess with no heart (Quantum, Spectre).
@Chr0noid: Yes and no. Skyfall might not be a good Bond film, but it is a good film. I felt the opposite with Spectre, it was a good Bond film, but not a good film. Many (myself included) get tired of the paint by numbers mentality of many of the Bond films. With Spectre it felt like a check list of Bond tropes. Bond girl? Check. Aston Martin? Check. Gadgets? Check. Multiple exotic locations? Check. Evil villain torture scene and lair? Check. And because of that the film never felt very coherent and felt bloated. Skyfall on the other hand had a far more coherent and interesting story and more well developed characters. It all comes down to what you want from a Bond film I guess.
Can't say I'm eagerly anticipating RE7. Honestly, I think this series would be better served looking at the competition rather than going back to its roots. To me, the best horror games of the past 5 or so years have been Dead Space and Alien Isolation. Both those games managed to combine rock solid controls, a great horror atmosphere, and game play that balanced tense, slow paced horror with exciting moments of action. I have a hard time believing that Capcom is self aware enough to change though. RE4 managed to find the sweet spot between horror and action, but ever since the series has been careening down hill towards generic action game.
Not really that big a deal. Big Boss was voiced by someone different in MGS4, so at some point Big Boss needs to stop sounding like Snake. To be honest, while I love what Hayter did with the character, I was getting a little tired of his overly gravely/mumbley voice.
@Gallowhand @redstorm72 Yeah, I forgot. I guess what I was saying was that Arnold made those movies. Your right though. Terminator 1 and 2 and Alien(s) are the only good example of action movies with female leads.
If they were really about championing female empowerment, then they wouldn't have made the cover of the game a glorified @ss shot. To me, this just seems like an attempt to deflect attention from what may be a mediocre game. Also, everyone doesn't have to enter "white knight" mode every time someone mentions that a female protagonist in an action game may not sell. Look at action movies, how many of them have female leads? Very few. Could you imagine Die Hard, Terminator or Rambo with a female lead? Me neither. It isn't about sexism, its just fact that audiences are more accepting of male leads in action games/movies. Don't blame the execs of these companies for playing to their audiences interests.
Unless there is something extremely sexual (rape?) I doubt it is too "risky" or "taboo" for it to effect sales or even get noticed. Hell, the rest of the series has already dealt with some pretty heavy topics (child soldiers, distrust of leadership, use of the military for political gain, loyalty vs. personal morals, etc) so I have a hard time imagining anything that is significantly more controversial. I think this is just a publicity stunt to stir up some interest. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the game.
