Horror of Fang Rock - The first appearance of the Rutans. I appreciate what it tries to do, but I don't believe it succeeds in doing so. The story tries to take advantage of the small setting to make a tense atmosphere but the needlessly convoluted plot spoils the fun. It also doesn't help that they add in new survivors during Episode 3, including their subplots, and when you only have 4 episodes to craft a story, it hinders things more than it helps. I can tolerate this one but it is one that I have to fight the urge to fast forward through.
Image of the Fendahl - The Doctor and Leela investigate a group of scientists who possess an ancient skull capable of dark magic. The scientists unknowingly use the skull, which has started to revive an ancient creature known as the Fendahl. This is one serial that I wish was two episodes instead of four. There is a lot of padding in this serial and it is obvious in every single episode. Less is more. I understand needing to keep to an episode limit for scheduling purposes but this one suffered greatly because of that. This would have been far better if it was told in a tight 50 minutes.
The Invisible Enemy - The first appearance of K-9. The Doctor becomes host to a sentient virus that uses mind control to dominate its subject and orders them to kill those it finds unworthy of infection. Those considered unworthy are immune to the virus' effects. With Leela deemed unworthy and being hunted by those infected, She helps the Doctor maintain control of his mind in hopes of finding a cure for the virus. This one is just plain freaking stupid. The make-up used to show who is infected looks cheap and terrible. The idea of shrinking down clones of Leela and the Doctor, and injecting them into the Doctor's body in hopes of finding the source of the virus is an interesting idea ruined by the limited visual effects of the time. This one borders being so stupid that it's good but it never becomes quite that.
