Blu-Ray vs HD DVD - Which was actually better?

I have had a HD DVD drive for my 360 and I have had a PS3 for a while now and there are 3 reasons why HD DVD was better in general:

1. It was far more consistant in terms of picture quality

2. the sound was better

3. there was no jerkyness when a film played at 24fps

(4. the boxes weren't bright blue!)

Console review: PS3

Finally got myself a PS3 a couple of months ago and here's my verdict:

Hardware

The machine itself is absolutely ace, a very well thought out piece of kit, it runs quietly all the menu's are well thought out and the Blu-Ray movies look very good when compared to normal DVD's on it. Speaking of DVD's, the upscaling is nowhere near as good as the 360's which can make DVD's look almost as good as Blu-Ray.

It can do slide shows, play music and play videos from usb memory sticks.

Sony seem to have tried their best to scam you out of your money once you have bought the console though as PS2 backwards compatability was remove rather infamously last year and there is no HD cable in the box so you have to fork out for a separate one at fifteen quid upwards.

Software

One word sums up this: none

There is a glut of games that are excellent but are also on the 360 with better versions such as Devil May Cry 4 which on the PS3 requires you to wait 20 minutes for you to install it, same with lost planet and there are also rumors that GTA 4 may need some installing before it can be played.

So far there are only 2 games that I can recommend and they are Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Ratchet and Clant has been done to death on the PS2 and if you have one I recommend playing it on that as the PS3 sequel is basically more levels with prettier graphics.

Uncharted is a different story, its a brand new game from the people who did the Jak and Daxter games, its a mix between Tomb Raider gameplay and Indianna Jones' humor and it is by far the best PS3 game out there right now. The graphics and sound are excellent as is the gameplay and story, but this one game does not justify purchasing a 300 pound console and I would recommend that you invest that money on a 360 elite with which you can get the similar Tomb Raider Aniversary and Tomb Raider Legend, both of which are not on the PS3 because of the removal of backwards compatability.

Also you cant get Gears of war, all the extra content for GTA 4, Halo 3, Crackdown, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Dead Rising, Saints Row and plenty more.

Game ideas from films + Tv!!!

1. House M.D. - perfect for the Wii with House's beautifully sacarstic sense of humor and the tight plotting from the series, could be in the form of trauma centre only with realistic graphics. its bound to suck in House fans!

2. Firefly/Serenity - brilliant sci-fi universe created by the guy who made buffy, but its far better than buffy for a conversion into a game due to that it could be the next knights of the old republic in terms of scope

3. the naked gun - frank drebin = funnier than anything, would be a must play if good enough

4. escape from new york - the real snake plisskin taking on the duke = epic game of awe inspiring proportions

5. Bottom - an adventure game in the mould of gta would stand out due to mental slapstick humor

More to come soon!

PS3? more like pointless 3

Just played on the PS3 for the first time the other day at the game on exhibit in London and I safely say its not worth the time or the effort to save up for one, I played Motorstorm and all I can say is its nothing that the 360 cannot do, look at the new Colin Mcrae, it's got a similar richness in graphics on that is on both of the machines.

Oh the main reason that PS3 needs blu ray is because of Sonys compression formats not being as good as microsofts, this is why the first gen hd-dvds look far better than the similar blu ray discs, even though blu ray discs had 10 more gigabytes of space, they didnt even come with all the extras that Hd-DVD's came with.

The fact that the PS3's blu ray is inferior in speed affects load times, it loads at 9mb per second (max), the 360's DVD by comparison loads at 16mb per second (max)

Microsoft's Larry Hryb (aka major nelson) has an interview with a tech guy about HD-DVD and Blu ray at this link

He also in another interview ( Click Here ) talks about the fact that 720p upscaled is better than 1080p native due to the fact that the majority of TV's do 720p only and that there is a trade off that you would have to make between better graphics and frame rates and the amount of special effects such as bump mapping and more complex particle effects.

Overall both the 360 and the PS3 have gone down very different routes, but they are similar in attainable power, the 360 has the advantage though: its cheaper by at least £100!

Is the Wii really as mainstream as Nintendo say it is

The Wii can be summed up in 2 words: Bloody brilliant!

Wii sports is a great party game and even though my parents never play games they lapped it up and joined in, since then I can seem to get a go on my Wii as they're hogging it!

The thing about the Wii is that unlike Eyetoy it is quite precise (and not gimmicky) which means its easy to use and more importantly accessible to non gamers, and for gamers it still has depth to its games.

I have a feeling that because of this it will be a far bigger success than the DS a nd even (maybe) the Playstation 2.

Great value gaming!

I know this may sound like an ad but lovefilm.com is ace!

For less than half the price of a 360 game (£20) a month you can borrow up to 3 games or films for as long as you want, its great if you want to build your acheivements or if you want to try out some new games that you are unsure about owning.

So far its saved me a bundle of cash

A warning for 360 owners

Beware of marketplace demos that are large in size if you have a weak connection as they can easily get screwed up.

My dead rising demo took 6 hours to download and freezes every time i boot it up, same for saints row.

lost planet is fine though

blog 1 31/7/06

My first thoughts on blogging were "who the hell reads them?" but then I thought it would be good to get my recent thoughts on video games out in the open for everyone to read.

I can sum up my interest in games in one word: rejuvenated. This is all thanks to Microsofts XBOX, it did a good job of replacing the SEGA shaped hole in its generation.

I already have a 360 and see the PS3 as a waste of time, the Wii looks fun, but there may be depth issues with its early games in the same way Sony's eye toy had.

But unlike Sony, Nintendo actually know how to make fun and involving games, no doubt that this'll incite the wrath of the soul-less Sony fanboys, but whats true is true.

Whatever you do don't believe Sony's hype as they lie constantly to draw your attention away from the other machines, this worked with the dreamcast and left SEGA out in the cold as a third party developer.

Don't believe the hype, make up your own mind.
