Sony and Nintendo officially crapped their pants yesterday.
Microsoft revealed a motion 'controller' called Project Natal. I know, the name doesn't say much for it but beyond the crazy name the motion capturing camera will change gaming forever.
Microsoft began with one of their project leaders showing off the device. He simply walked in front of the camer and it figured out who he was and signed him into the Xbox.
Wait, that wasn't it. They then showed off a woman who was playing a 'brick breakdown' game where she would hit balls into a stack of bricks to knock them down. She was using her arms, legs, and head. Every single motion was captured and used in the game. It seemed that even the most slightest movement was detected by the camera. They also showed a paint application but that was near as impressive.
Microsoft also played a video with all sorts of different applications that the device can be used for. A simple swipe of the hand to move through menus and when you once you've chosen something off of the menu all you have to do, for example, is say "Play (insert movie title)" and it will start playing.
At the end of the presentation was the most impressive. Peter Molyneux came out and showed a game called Milo. Milo is a totally emotional character and you were able to communcate with him through the voice recognition. You can actually have a conversation with the character. It was simply amazing. The way that you could interact with a character and their environment was stunning.
Another great thing about the device is that all you'll need is the device. You won't have to upgrade the system that you already have. So if you don't like spending $500 every 4 or 5 years for a new system, you won't.
Project Natal has really stolen E3 this year and it seems that everyone is talking about it. Microsoft has sent the Project Natal kits to developers and hopefully we'll see some integration is some of the great games that we will see and even some integration with some games that we already love.
