@mirage_so3 @Ingretlam @rustymenon If that's what he meant, I apologize for misreading it but it still seems a bit off to me. I do believe the only character you're "supposed" to sympathize with is Ellie, but it helps if you sympathize with all the characters. It sure did seem to work in Heavy Rain.
I don't give a damn about the score, I just noticed that several issues that Tom pointed out in his review were a bit off. The immersion breaking issue that he mentioned (about how the companion AI talks even though in front of an enemy, or no guard noticing a dead body) is something I faced in Uncharted 2, and that's a game Tom rated a good 9.5 himself without mentioning this bug.
The "supporting characters aren't sympathetic" is actually something I strongly disagree with. The game begins 20 years after the infection, so the adults would have grown up in that sort of cruel world where they've seen loved ones been killed, etc. so I can clearly see why they don't show a shred of sympathy in a cut throat world.
@Yomigaeru Actually, I sort of agree with this. Everybody needs to read the Walking Dead comic to really see how brutal characters get in a messed up world. But, really, a sympathetic character mixes it up a bit.
@Liquid-San @rustymenon Let's not forget that's because Joel met Ellie, all the reviews I've read strongly point towards Ellie changing Joel as a person. The other characters, I can only assume, are adults who are now hardened because of living in such a world.
Let me point at The Walking Dead for this, there were very few sympathetic characters in general in there.
I'm actually disappointed to see that this review highlighted a couple of the AIs flaws which were present in Uncharted 2 as well (sneak kill in front of a guard and they barely notice, or character standing right in front of enemies) yet Uncharted was universally praised, but not this. As to why Tom would even ask for sympathetic characters in a cut throat world, I cannot understand. Add to that all the issues of one note characters, I don't know why he can say that when rarely such an issue is pointed out in a FPS. I know this is different, but standards for storytelling should be universal and not game by game in most cases.
Tom McShea honestly lost all respect in my eyes after his Skyward Sword review and to an extent his I am Alive review (the score wasn't bad, but the review failed to tell us anything about the gameplay, rather the faults about the atmosphere of the game). The website has seriously gone downhill ever since Ricardo Torres left as EIC. The only reviewer I really care about now is Kevin VanOrd, and for some magical reviews, Chris Watters and Carolyn Petit.
@PupilsDilated Ummm... what about Microsoft's move to release a statement like "Nobody knows about the PS4 reveal so it won't affect us' right before Sony's reveal?
@Double_Wide Hmm......let's see, what was the difference between PS1, PS2, and PS3? The controller was same, if that's how you're looking at Wii U. The difference was better graphics, and new ports.
@wwefan4ever Have you even played one of those games? They are all different, with different storylines, gameplay, level. This is the only time they are remaking games, that too to celebrate 25 years of Zelda. And, what about rehashes of, say, COD? Or, looking at your username, SvR?
What about Pokemon? They can probably implement some different game mechanics, like battling anime style, rather that the usual turn based. It'll add strategic battling, and it'll give weaker Pokemon a chance for winning. Items and using moves cane be done on the controller.
For all of you who think this is pointless, Let me ask you, what is the point of PS3 and XBox 360? Don't they have all the same buttons? I haven't seen anything new with the passing generations of them, except for graphics and connection to LED TVs, and really, that's not related to gameplay at all. Let me tell you, I have a PS2, and I'm still extremely happy with it.
