Oblivion was the one of greatest game I have ever played, no other rpg having come close to the experience that the Elder Scrolls can provide. Other rpgs such as FF may have the ability to appeal to the more dedicated gamers, but I believe that the western influences that Bethesda have on their games create a universally playable experience that allows players to jump into a game, run around a bit and have a bit of fun without dedicating their lives to the game. Whilst also giving people the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in an epic game, I know which I'll be doing for Skyrim though.
FPS AI do well in some games, but I don't think they can compare to the complexity of the AI in games such as oblivion or fallout 3 where they do different things each day and changing the slightest thing can have a huge impact on their daily routine
