A Happy Ending

So, this little fic is thankfully so AU as never to even be considered. I hate deathfics, but Kat made me feel sad, so I'm giving her a taste of her own medicine...

All is disclaimed, of coures, and Kat's so not getting JA for her birthday. I already got him and wrapped him (in my arms) and everything, but now I'm just gonna keep him...

Anyway, to the story...

"Sam?" Sam looked at his brother questioningly. "What's your happy ending?" Dean asked. Sam's brow creased. He smiled awkwardly, shaking his head a little.

"What?"

"What's your happy ending, Sam?" Dean asked again, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Where's that coming from?" Sam asked, bewildered.

"Just answer the freaking question, would you?"

"Happy ending?" Sam mused, his eyes darting around. He thought about it for a moment, and then shrugged one shoulder. "I dunno. We kill the Demon, I go back to school, graduate, get a really good job somewhere, maybe make partner in five years' time… Get married, have a couple of kids… I dunno, I guess that'd be nice..." Sam said, his voice trailing off at the end. There was a moment of silence before his blinked, coming back from his reverie and looked at his brother. "Why?" he asked, "What's your happy ending, Dean?" Dean gave him a weak smile and looked away, as if caught in his own reverie.

"Dean?" Sam asked again.

"I really can't think of any." Dean said, giving another weak smile. He hated the way Sam looked at him at that moment, those big brown eyes looking at him with such pity and disbelief. He hated that, hated being pitied. Pity was for the weak, and if there was one thing you could say about Dean Winchester, it was that he was anything but weak. Dean looked away from his brother, swallowing, wetting his lips. "I guess… I guess this is pretty much it. You being here with me…" He said, shrugging. His eyes felt heavy. He tried to keep them open. Now wasn’t the time to close them. Not yet. But he couldn’t stand the way his little brother was looking at him. He closed his eyes.

"Dean…" Sam shook his head, swallowing hard, "Dean, you're not gonna die! You hear me?" he demanded. "Dean!" But Dean didn’t hear him. Ever again.
