Coincidence and faith with a twist of bad luck

The story I have to tell you is strange in more ways then one.

Five years ago when life for me dealt a strange hand of cards and I was forced to buy an apartment. I found a nice little place, not far from where I lived with my parents, a little apartment, 40 square meters of my own living space.
I was thrilled, thrilled even more so 'cause circumstances unfolded in that way that I would have never found the place with regular real-estate agencies. But that's not important.

The guy I bought it from was this strange man, a war veteran, that got the apartment from the army. He decided he wanted his own peace and quiet and that he would move to the outskirts. When I came to the picture as a buyer he was in the middle of tearing down some walls and putting up new ones in the apartment so I had to wait a while before moving in.

When the day came we sat down, signed the contract and handed money from one hand to another. A bigger part of the cash was handed to him in a blue envelope and a smaller part was put in his hand. My Mum was with me. He stood up, we shook hands, he put the blue envelope in his jacket pocket and the smaller amount of cash into his back pocket of his jeans.

My Mum noticed that his jacket pocket wasn't big enough for that blue envelope and she mentioned that to him before he left.
After he had left we started unpacking things, not 15min have passed and he was back and out of his mind. He had lost the blue envelope! He came back storming in the apartment, turning things over and looking for the envelope. Once he was convinced that the envelope wasn't in the apartment he left with a defeated look on his face.

After a while we met again. He said he went to this fortuneteller that had told him the money was found by someone who lives in my building (it wasn't me.. if it would have been me I would have gave him his money back).
He is a person, I guess, who believes in witchcraft and he told me he payed this woman to give the lost money some kind of curse. I didn't want to know the details.

After a year had passed, this big family up on the 4th floor wasn't so big anymore. The younger part of the family (their son, his wife and their child) moved out into a new house. The grandfather had a big stroke and his condition is still very bad...

My thought was... that finding that much money laying on the ground happens once in 3 lives but yet I wouldn't want that happening to me.

Would you?
