Metal Gear Solid here I come!
Before I begin, I would like to point out that I did a quick google and forum search before creating this topic. However, I believe hearing the opinions and suggestions of several fans of this series would be much more beneficial than anything I could ever find in a search.
With the upcoming release of MGS4, a game that has piqued my interest in the Metal Gear series, I was wondering what you fellow gamers think is the best way to get into the series.
Should I just dive into the series with MGS4? There is a significant time difference between the rest of the games, so maybe that will mean that the story won't require as much background on the rest of the games. I could just read a synopsis. However, given how confusing all the names get, I think a synopsis might be very hard to understand for someone who is unfamiliar with the series. Plus, I would love to play the original games anyway, they are classics :)Or should I play all the other games, or, at least, some of them? If so, where do I start? Are Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 important enough to play? I understand that they are included with MGS3, should I buy MGS3, play MG and MG2, and then start with the Metal Gear Solid games starting with the original on the PS1? And then move on to MGS2 and then play MGS3? I have all 3 Playstations still intact (PSOne, PS2, PS3 - yes I know PS3 can play PS1 games, and I'm hoping my 80 gig can play the MGS PS2 games, but in case there is some difficulty, I can play them on the original systems).
Note: Given the length of these games, I probably won't complete the entire series before playing MGS4. The entire point of playing the originals is to become familiar with the characters and plot to be able to play MGS4. With this in mind, perhaps there is a better way to start? I'll most likely end up playing the original games eventually, but I may play MGS4 before I play some of the others. So what do you absolutely recommend I play before playing MGS4? Is Metal Gear 1 and 2 necessary? Should I skip over MGS2 and go straight to MGS3? Should I not bother with MGS3 since it's a prequel?
As you can probably see, with all the chronology and remakes and different systems, it can become confusing to someone like me who is unfamiliar, yet interested in this series. Any and all help/opinions are appreciated. Thanks for reading this entire post, I know it probably seemed a bit daunting but your effort is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any responses I may get :)
It would look better if it had a critic's quote on the front praising the game. You know, emphasize the "great" part of "Greatest Hits".
However, I'm doubting the North American and European "The Best" artwork is going to look the same as the japanese artwork...
