Halo Wars

I have seen so many different articles on this game so I thought I would jot down my thoughts on it. I am a PC and 360 gamer, and love strategy, and indeed quite like the halo universe.

I played the demo on live, and my initial reactions are;

- graphics not as good as contemporary PC games by a long way (or even several year old PC games). this was not a huge suprise but..

- poor frame rate. i would have expected this not to be an issue considering my above point.

-no resource management. RTS games have tackled this mechanic in different ways over the years, from the warcraft 2 style collect X, Y and Z to DoW's requisition points and CoH's resources sans base (sometimes). however, i feel HW completely removes this from the equation - by allowing players, nay forcing players, to build 1 structure which will automatically gather resources infinitely. this just removes any idea of strategy from the mix. at least in C&C (often criticised for lack of strategy) you have to place your base and tib plant in a strategic location where you can defend your harvesters. the fact that the bases in HW are in pre-determined places takes all of that decision making away.

-idiot proof units - they have taken little risk here. basic unit types, and idiot proof descriptions which tell players exactly what each unit is for

overall, i do not think i will be buying this game. from a strategy point of view it just doesnt do enough, and the subject matter doesnt hold enough interest for me to warrant it alone. i dont oppose console RTS, but i just hope games like this will convince devs that the PC is the home of more in depth strategy games.

oh the horror

recently i have been watching a lot of horror movies, its always been a favorite genre of mine but now i can go to cinema again (back problems - hadnt gone for about 3 years) im really enjoying watching some new ones and classics i missed.

have watched the saw quarilogy on DVD - what a fantastic series that really is. i preferred the first and second but others still good. i am now eagerly awaiting the release of the fifth on DVD. cant wait to see what happens - wont say any more than that to avoid spoiling for anyone.

i saw My Bloody Valentine 3d at the cinema - WOW those real d glasses are amazing! what a great film that was. and i got to keep my cool real d glasses :)

last friday (the 13th) i saw the remake of friday the 13th and i really enjoyed that too. it had the unusual mix of comedy and horror which i really enjoyed. the asian guy was hilarious, and the kill scenes were pretty good too (if totally unrealistic)

i now plan to get the original friday 13th films on DVD

fighting games rennaissanse

It has been a long time since i played fighting games. Killer Instinct 64 and SF2 turbo being the last serious once. but recently I have bought soul calibur 4 and i must say its really good.

I am now looking forward to SF4 very much.

I remember a game called bushido blade - i wish they would re-make that. it was awesome, Samurai's, one-hit sword kills, and blood-o-plenty! some one make it, please...
