It's not just women that spur the story. Why didn't you guys talk about Sam and Henry? That was such a horrible scene. And Joel has had so many scenes with Ellie that show his emotional side, he cared for Ellie which is why he was so angry about everything. It baffles me to even consider him as a horrible human being in the context of the game, he took her across states for her.

And honestly, what would you do with a cure. At this point in time humanity destroys itself even further even without the infected. It's not worth 'saving' because there is nothing to save.
