I still play the game, I wish they held off and developed on a next gen system. This is by far my favourite movie of all time. The Warriors is a movie from way before my time and still, I see it as an eternal ****c. It is a retro story of strength, underdogs, and gangs. I also respect this movie more being the controversial movie that many blame for gang violence. This just shows how much something as simple as a movie can change an entire culture. But that aside, the fight scenes are intense, the acting is great, and the soundtrack is perfect.
The movie follows a gang of nine guys from The Warriors gang of Coney Island as they head up to The Bronx for a big meeting. The meeting was called by Cyrus, who is the leader of the biggest gang in the city, as he wants to create a 60,000 strong gang which can overpower the police. Under a truce, nine members from each gang attend the meeting where Cyrus begins his speech of unity. Just as he finishes detailing his plan, he gets shot dead by Luther. In the panic that ensues, Luther frames The Warriors for shooting Cyrus. As the gangs flee back to their home turf, The Warriors soon realise that they need to bop their way back to Coney Island. To make matters worse, the truce has been called off, The Warriors have no weapons and every gang in the city is out looking for them. The movie follows their struggle back home through enemy turf, and shows their encounters with various gangs including the Orphans, and the infamous Baseball Furies.
Since the film was shot in 1979, it gives the whole movie a sense of authenticity and transports you back to a time when walking around New York in the middle of the night was not such a great idea. Being the late seventies, gangs could get away with wearing brightly coloured outfits consisting of shiny purple jackets to dungarees. The subway is also an icon of the movie and is what drives the story's progression through the city and the encounters with different gangs at each stop. The soundtrack is great and the rock synthesiser scores by Barry de Vorzon really create an atmosphere fit for the scenes they play over (The Baseball Furies chase being a particular favourite).
The Warriors is being remade by MTV Productions in conjunction with Paramount Pictures. This movie isn't strictly a remake since it is going to be set in Los Angeles in 2008 and none of the characters or gangs from the original movie will be in it. Yes that's right, no Ajax, no Swan, no Orphans or Baseball Furies! In fact the only similarities with the original movie are the title, the name of The Warriors gang, and the basic plot. Rumour has it that Cyrus will still be the name of the guy who called the meeting. Expect the movie to be released some time in 2008
Rockstar Games' The Warriors is a video game based on the 1979 cult movie of the same name. Rockstar have brought back the brawler genre with this game, the likes of which have not been seen since Streets of Rage. the game features real street fighting and the ability to use just about anything lying around as a weapon.
The Warriors keep each other in check and watch each other's back, always making sure no other outfit tries to get up on their turf. According to some of the other gangs they've earned themselves "a pretty heavy rep" down in Brooklyn. Every member of this set displays their colours with pride, refusing to part with their vest even if it means getting their head split- which, for a Warrior, is rare. The Warriors understand the streets. Each member deals out serious damage in a rumble or avoids getting wrecked in his own way. Although there is a clear structure to the gang, they always stick together and every member matters to this Coney crew. In the fight to get to the top and the race to make it back to the Big C.I., The Warriors learn who they can rely on in difficult situations.
As retro game addicts know, the depth of game play in a ****c coin-op "brawler" leaves something to be desired. Restricted by limited animations, early video game attempts at street survival featured narrowly defined stories and over-simplified characters. The basic environments were filled with elements borrowed from the set of the latest Chuck Norris movie and left little to explore. In the case of most 8-bit "brawlers", mastering the game consisted of landing a few perfectly timed punches to take out some random thugs or a stage boss. Was it repetitive? Yes. Was it fun? Yes. The kind of fun we haven't had in years. Think back at how many quarters were lost in 1989 to "Crime Fighters" battling the impossible chain-wielding, leather-clad punk with the extreme red and yellow mohawk.
Providing players with all the fun of an old-school addictive brawler on a next-gen system demands a dynamic, tense and cinematic environment. Throwing a cult-****c license in the mix begs for an accurate, familiar and immersive playing experience. To convincingly place The Warriors into a virtual world, the Rockstar Toronto team had to ensure each character kept their own distinctive fighting ****and attitude.
Here's the low-down on each Warrior's ****and the skills they bring to the NYC streets.
AJAX
Arguably the heaviest brawler in The Warriors, Ajax is a trash talking pugilist with a sparkplug temper. He proudly wears his cocky attitude on his sleeve like a badge of honour and is more than happy to be an instigator. He will always respond fists first, never holding back or restraining himself. Ajax also has a weakness for women, although he often has trouble expressing himself the way a gentleman ought to. Ajax talks a big game and is quick to provide a snide remark to friends and foes alike; but in an all out brawl the rest of the Warriors are glad he's on their side.
CLEON
As Warlord, Cleon is the leader who must remain rock solid at all times. His seriousness adds balance to the blend of personalities in the gang. Known for his leopard-print head dress and lethal elbows, Cleon is always prepared to stand his ground - even if it means getting wasted by a group of overanxious Riffs hell-bent on revenge. Raised on the streets of Coney, he doesn't show much emotion, but his quickness never leaves much time to second guess his next decision. Cleon is determined to make a name for the Warriors by proving to every other gang in the city that they are the heaviest set around. From his humble beginnings to his untimely end, Cleon stays true to himself, his home and his crew.
COCHISE
A fighter dripping with natural **** Cochise displays a fluidity in his fighting that is rivalled by none and feared by all. Raised up in Harlem - The Boppers territory - his family moved down to Coney Island where he sought out The Warriors and proved to them he would be a valuable addition to their set. Cochise understands that The Warriors need to stick together if they want to survive and it's this level headedness that has gained him the respect and trust of his fellow Warriors.
COWBOY
Acting as a rock-solid supporting player, Cowboy is a trustworthy soldier who would back up any of his brothers in a brawl. His lack of charisma is made up for in reliability and determination. Not to be underestimated, Cowboy can get real heavy given the right set of tools, and he's very capable of dishing out a serious beating to almost anyone he squares off with. He was brought into the Warriors along with Swan when Cleon invited the two of them to join up and has been sporting the vest and cracking heads ever since.
THE FOX
A walking encyclopaedia of street knowledge, Fox was orphaned at a young age and was forced to fend for himself and survive out on the streets. He knows NYC like the back of his hand - from the back alleys of Chinatown to the less than friendly hideaways of East Harlem. Fox is very level headed and his ego never gets the best of him. Initially, some of The Warriors were hesitant about Fox's brawling skills, but these concerns were quickly put to rest during his initiation. Fox's keen eye and cool head help balance out the Warriors' ultra heavy set.
REMBRANDT
The youngest of the gang, Rembrandt, is a writer that tries to put up Warriors tags wherever he can. When marching on enemy turf, Rembrandt snuffs out every piece of other gang graffiti he sees with a quick and simple red "W". Snuffing a rival gang's tag with a throw up takes guts. It is an extreme form of disrespect. From The Big C.I. to the Upper West Side the Warriors mark is well-known. Not being limited to throw-ups, Rembrandt's reputation as a true writer precedes him - he is highly respected for tagging buildings and trains, and he's got a special burner he lays down for the Warriors.
Although Rembrandt is a little soft around the edges, don't confuse his slight stature for weakness; the Warriors would never roll with someone they considered to be a liability. Rembrandt isn't afraid to get into the thick of it and bust some heads by using spraying spray paint in the face of an enemy. Although he is cautious, he still gets wrecked from time to time. The important thing is that Rembrandt keeps getting up. All the Warriors know that this kid earned his vest, and from rumble to rumble, Rembrandt continues to prove that he can stand up with the best of them.
SNOWBALL
A good fighter with plenty of moves, Snow can handle both the Punks and the Furies. Quiet, calm and rational, he can hang tough in any fight. His massive strength is matched by his loyalty to the gang - he doesn't want to see anyone get wrecked. A trusted member of the Warriors, Snow accompanies the delegates to the meeting with Cyrus because he is the Warriors heavy muscle, tested and proven many times before. A skilled fighter, Snow employs combos and power moves with a punishing effect and can be trusted to take on any number of opponents, dealing them off with lethal efficiency.
SWAN
Swan is Cleon's second in command, making him the acting War Chief during the long walk home. Hard and focused, Swan is a man of few words who chooses to express himself through fist clenching moments of awkward silence. When he does speak, it's immediately understood why he is Cleon's worthy successor as leader of the Warriors. He is well built and relies on an equal balance of raw strength, level headedness and technique. When the Punks ambush the Warriors in Union Square, Swan makes sure to throw the last guy through the bathroom stall door, leaving the Punk head first in the toilet.
A mix between kung-fu and refined street brawling, Swan commands instant respect; you'd never find him lipping off or getting too hot-headed when the heat is on. Using his instinct, he leads the Warriors back to Coney Island, constantly negotiating the finer details of a well thought through plan. Wanted by the Rogues and hunted by the Riffs, Swan does everything he can to get the Warriors back to Coney without getting wasted.
VERMIN
Vermin is a true soldier. He's been with The Warriors from day one and always has their best interests in mind. Vermin can brawl and has a unique way of combining chaos and order in his fighting **** With some of the most devastating attacks of any of the Warriors, Vermin is a force to be reckoned with. Although he can be a bit of a pessimist, Vermin's most compelling characteristic is the ability to put a smile on the face of his fellow Warriors.
I know the game is a bit old for a review, but if you're a fan like me, you should definitely check it out!
The storyline is excellent. You get a full history of the Warriors up to Cyrus' meeting. However Rockstar Games has taken some liberties with the story to make the game more interesting. For example, the Warriors rumble with The Orphans twice, early in the game and during the trip home from as in the film.
Each level allows you to be one of the nine main Warriors, each with his own level of skills. Rembrandt, for example, is better with a spray paint can than Ajax, however Ajax can fight better than Rembrandt. In each level you have a mission to complete, whether it be collecting money from a rival gang, defending your turf, or at one point winning a spray painting contest sponsored by a rival gang. Each level also has is bonus missions. Mostly crossing out tags of rival gangs.
Between levels you get to venture inside the Warriors hangout and there you can complete several bonus rounds. You get to get in shape with exercises, bop around Coney Island, and even help out bums. Also included are flashback missions. Here you get to see how the Warriors got started and how each of the nine main characters became Warriors.
All in all, Rockstar games has made an excellent game. Everything is included including the original score. They even went out and got some of the original cast to do voices, including Michael Beck, James Remar and Deborah VanValkenburg.
The film is currently ranked No.16 in ****c cult movie popularity lists. But it is definitely No.1 on my list.
